In this question (see attached picture) they ask which bond is the longest. I thought weaker bonds (like that between the O and H) are longer! Also, I figured the O-N bond would be stronger (and shorter) because there MAY be a little resonance between the O and the N (not sure about this though). Also, since O and N are closer in energy, there would be more overlap and thus it would be stronger and a shorter bond.

where is my thinking wrong here??
Thanks🙂

I got this one wrong too because of the same reasoning.

As you can see, C and D are the same type of bond, so they can be eliminated. Now the competition is between A and B. According to AAMC, the small radius of the hydrogen atom is the reason why the NO bond is longer. Perhaps, if the atoms involved were similar in size, then electronegativity is given precedence over the atom size, but it is clear that Nitrogen is multiple folds larger in radius than hydrogen, so in this particular question, atomic radius is given precedence.

I guess that makes sense :/ but since there are such big differences between the atomic radii of H and O you would think that theres very little overlap, making the bond weaker...

ugh its a frustrating question... but i guess i can accept what youre saying... since H is so small that fact is the deciding factor. N is much bigger and therefore the bond between the nuclei will be longer.

How did you get the picture on SDN? Did you save it as a screen shot and then attach it?

I didn't have that type of thinking... I was just thinking C and D could be eliminated and the O would want to hold the hydrogen tightly because it is SO electronegative and and hydrogen is so small. Thus, the O-H bond would be the shortest. And the O would be more attracted to the H than the N. Thus, the answer the N-O bond. Also I think the other N-O bonds experience resonance, but I did not even factor that in but I think AAMC talks it in their answer.

What is your test date Meredith?

Okay that makes sense thanks for your help!
my test date is April 4th! Coming up! How about you?

April 26th. I saw that you were taking all of the self-assessments. Have you completed all of them yet? I hope to start them this weekend. I am nervous and excited. I really want to get this over with and just get into my dream medical school.

Have you done the self assessment for verbal? Right now I really need to focus on it? Do you think it helped?

I completed chem, physics and bio. I got 89 in chem, 87 in physics, and bio was a mess cuz I took it right after I took an AAMC exam, so I was tired and did each passage in like 5 min (so burnt out) and got an 82, which i think was atypical since I normally get really high bio scores. But it definitely made me realize how important it is to check over my work in bio!! Im gonna spread out verbal over the last week to make sure I'm in the zone of using AAMC verbal passages. I've been using TPRH for verbal and i think its a great representation of the types of passages youll see (although the questions are a bit weird sometimes).

Also- be prepared for each self assessment to be a day's worth of work (theyre completely exhausting) and for it to take about a day to go over the passages. they REALLY wore me out. I had to take a longgg break after I finished them because I really wore myself out!
I feel the same way though! I cant wait for it to be over with. I'm using this last week as if it were finals period, and just gonna review my weaknesses. It helps to just think of this like any other test. I'm nervous and excited as well! Trying to stay confident and not think about those nerves. We can do this!!

Did you time yourself when doing the assessments? According to AAMC, the assessments are untimed. I definitely need to practice taking verbal timed. Do you know if this one can be timed by AAMC or should I do my own timing?

I think you gotta do your own timing unfortunately :/
