503 MCAT
4.0 SMP, 2.9 undergrad GPA
non-traditional applicant
half URM (AA)
4000+ clinical hours, 500+ volunteer hours (AA community/health disparities)
NY resident
significant life experience to back up low undergraduate GPA

Recently received my MCAT score. Not as high as I was expecting, and am now a bit lost as to which MD schools would be appropriate to apply to. Given my stats and background, I would appreciate any helpful recommendations for MD schools to apply to. Thank you.

I have heard state schools should be on my list. Is this true? Are "state schools" simply all the schools within my state of residence?

State schools means all public universities in your state, since they would be more accepting of in state applicants.

Does your SMP have a linkage with a med school?

I think your MCAT score is in the range such that you should be considering DO as well

Yes, it does. Thank you.

I suggest these MD schools with your stats:
Howard
Meharry
Morehouse
All 4 SUNY's
Albany
New York Medical College
Quinnipiac
Seton Hall
NOVA MD
Oakland Beaumont
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
St. Louis
Creighton
George Washington
Drexel
Temple
If you are applying this year you need to apply this month and submit all your secondaries by September.
Your chances for a MD acceptance are less than 50% so you should apply broadly to DO schools and I suggest these:
ACOM
ARCOM
NYIT (both schools)
BCOM
UIWSOM
LMU-DCOM
UP-KYCOM
WVSOM
VCOM (all 3 schools)
LECOM (all schools)
PCOM Georgia and South Georgia

I agree with Faha's list but think that you should aim a bit higher:
Case
BU
Jefferson
U Miami
BU
Emory
UCLA/Drew
Keck
Dartmouth
Einstein
Rochester
tulane
ANY DO school...except the four I can't recommend.

This is very helpful. Thank you.

I noticed some of these schools have high MCAT averages (eg. BU, Rochester, Dartmouth, Einstein). Would you mind sharing on why you feel those particular schools would be worth me applying to in that case?

We need URM doctors, so your low MCAT is less of a handicap.

I suggest you call Stritch then, I thought it was a "holistic process" as well but after hearing this from my best friend and our other mutual friend who is now an M1 at Rosalind Franklin that's what the director said. They also provide a "rejection panel" for students who have been rejected and want to know why.

And I suggest that you look at MSAR. You also can’t believe everything you hear through the grapevine. Their 25th percentile is 507 and the 10th is 503 so your claim of a screen at 509 makes no sense. I know someone there with a 497 by the let’s just go by the non-anecdotal evidence.

This ^^^. Loyola prides itself on their holistic review process despite the crazy number of apps
