On the technical side of the answer to that problem, I *COULDN'T* use all 5300, because it would change all the " ' " to "?" and cut off the last line. When I made it 5250, it was fine. Make sure when you save it, it's still in a good formatt.
As for the literary merits of hitting that point, I don't know for sure (Being that my writing skills are only at the "P" level), but if you really have 5300 characters of things to say, I'd go for it, but definitely don't add fluff, and don't repeat yourself.

5300 characters is just a maximum limit. Anything below that is fine. They just don't want to have to read novels about how applicants want to help people. Honestly, there is not going to be a number below your PS that says how many characters it is, or else it would have shown up in your print-out.
Mine was 5247 characters, but I cut that down considerably from my first draft that was two pages long!

I just finished the fourth draft of my essay and i edited so much that im down to about 2000! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Is that too short? I'll probably add a bit more but i doubt ill even get to 5000.

Please remember paragraphs counts at least 2 spaces. I think the length (2000-3000) doesn't really matter, as long as the essay has the substance.

i just don't see why when i paste it , it says 5300 characters. and then when i hit finish- and i go back in- it cuts it off and it's at 5192.
weird. this happened before to me, but was fixed later and i got my essay to fit. but then i make one change.. try to paste it back in there from notepad and this happens again.
weird weird weird.
oh well.. good luck to you all

dave•••••That's the same thing that happened to me. Watch your apostrophies (damn spelling!) to make sure they aren't changed. You'll just have to cut it down until it doesn't do that anymore. I wonder if this is a browser problem since it didn't happent to everyone? I tried it on (MAC) Netscape 4.75 & 6.2 and Explorer 5.1. (Which is pretty much all I have.)
