6 yr OMFS Grants?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sure, but these scholarships tend to be built into the program structure. This is different from the traditional medical school route where schools will actively offer scholarships to attract top students.

Saying that, some programs have extremely cheap medical tuition. Oregon gives you a full ride, Texas schools are usually under 20k/year. Louisville used to be free, but now it's still cheap at under 20k/year. Many schools will give you in-state tuition.

Also, there's nothing stopping you from applying for grants and scholarships while you are enrolled in medical school.

Parkland/UTSW:
We got in-state tution at about 20k a year. We also get a "grant" for 4.5k per year of med school.

So in total we pay 60k, but get back 18k (the 4.5k back is per calendar year, so you get 4 payments back).

You can definitely apply for scholarships once in medical school, at least I know that we can.

So, do you receive a financial aid package from the medical school upon acceptance into the residency program?or do you have to wait until medical school years of residency?

You will get a financial aid package from the med school during your med school years.

Curious how this works... do you take out loans while being paid a stipend during med school years?

Many programs will not pay you a stipend during your medical school years, so yes. For those that do, you may have to take out loans to cover for tuition.
This question is complicated as programs have a varied agreement with med schools on how many months of medical school the residents are required to take to obtain the MD. It can range from 1 year in a place like Case Western to all 4 years at UCSF.

At Michigan, the OMFS department pays half ($27k/yr) of medical school tuition and the financial aid office will offer grants as long as you submit your FAFSA. In the end, I'm paying close to nothing for medical school tuition.

We get financial aid (up to ~55k per year). You do not get paid unless you're on service.
