Sorry, never been in that particular situation, but 'team dinners' are fairly common. If you were the only one on the 'team' then maybe...

You'd really be the only one that could judge romantic interest, like the above poster described. If there were signals or even hints then I'd def politely decline. If your relationship was strictly professional and perhaps you mentioned wanting to pursue training in the same specialty as the preceptor, he/she could genuinely be looking to play a mentor role. Even then though, I'd try and turn it into a lunch or brunch thing rather than dinner.

Go to dinner if you wouldn't mind going on a date with him. By saying 'wait till you get your grade so there is no issue of breach of professionalism', he acknowledged that it would be a date bc a date would be a breach of the teacher-student relationship.

Had several preceptors take me to dinner at the end of a preceptorship. Had an academic advisor take me to dinner. I think you're reading way too much into this; a lot of attendings find dinner a good way to debrief in a less professional setting with their students, especially if they enjoyed having them around.

I received an e-mail from a former preceptor (opposite sex) offering to buy me dinner sometime. The preceptor followed the e-mail up with a second one instructing me not to reply to the first until my eval and rec were completed to avoid any appearance of impropriety. How do I respond to this? I wouldn't mind maintaining a professional contact with this preceptor but I'm worried there might be an underlying agenda to the invite. Anyone been in a similar situation?

I've been invited to dinner too and it led to no problems. But the followup email seems kinda weird that he or she thought of that. Usually its just a thank you for your help lunch or dinner and that's that. Hmmm just trust your instincts if there was anything else you sensed during the rotation...
