7'' Versus 10'' Tablet

How hard was the adjustment to go from textbook to electronic versions/journal articles? Do you use 10'' or 7'' tablets? Going back and forth on getting a tablet, tempted by the Nexus 7 but not sure if that size screen will be adequate.
 
Isn't the average journal 8-9"? With the ability to zoom, 7" seems fine. Would be more portable, too.

My iPad is a bit bigger and heavier than I would like (I believe they're 10"), and if they ever came out with a 7" iPad (rumor has it that this is on the horizon), I'd be all over it. With that said, I don't want to give up the good points I get from the iPad to get a 7" droid based tablet.
 
I played around with a few tablets since I asked, my big thing would be reading journal articles and textbooks. I tried out a bunch of 7'' tablets and found them too small(eReaders, Nexus 7, etc), so I decided I would want a larger sized tablet. I played around with the iPad vs Android based tablets, I've always used Android based phones and found I like the Android OS for tablets too. My big issue now is I've heard rumors of a 10'' Google tablet coming out sometime this fall, so I'm not sure if I should just buy the current Android tablet I have my eye on or wait it out for a possible 10'' Google based tablet.
 
I bought the Nexus 7 and have no regrets. It's portable enough to stick in a white coat pocket, and any larger would be too big to carry around with me. I don't have any trouble reading journal articles/pdfs, but a textbook with lots of photos and diagrams would probably not work well. I've always hated using electronic stuff for anything I may want to flip around in though, so that was never my intent with the Nexus 7.

I also love the flexibility of Android vs. iOS. The Nexus lets you drag and drop pdfs, movies, etc. if you plug it into your computer. iOS is harder to get stuff like that on (I think you'd have to load Dropbox or some other cloud storage) and load it all from there. Then you have to hassle with hospital wifi crap to access your articles.
 
I'm actually kind of fascinated by the samsung galaxy note, the phone that's a tablet that's a phone. My friend at work had one, it was quite an interesting size actually..
 
I'm a Mac guy usually (Macbook pro, iphone) but felt the ipad was too large and cumbersome for lugging to OR etc. Bought the new Google Nexus 7 and LOVE it. Perfect size for scrub pockets, easy to use, lightening fast. And MUCH cheaper than an ipad. Highly recommended.
 
Nexus 7 is awesome tablet. I am electronics junkie. Owned first android g1 to latest gnex along with all iPhones and even venture into windows 7 phones.

However on third nexus 7. All 3 have screen creaking noises. 2 of them bad light bleed. So taking last Nexus 7 back to Staples.

I will wait till next Apple announcement if they come out with 7.85 inch iPad mini and the pricing. If it doesn't impress me. I will re buy nexus 7. Hopefully there quality control is better with next batch of nexus 7 being produced in September.

I have also owned all 3 iPads. The new iPad is def heavier than the 2. But I have the Verizon unlimited lte sim in my Verizon iPad (those of us techies all know the trick to get unlimited data for $24/month with Verizon).

And having cellular data especially unlimited lte with unlimited hotspot tethering just cannot be beat in iPad 3. Verizon cannot audit lte sim switching per their FCC agreement. If u tried same stunt with AT&T iPhone sim in gsm iPad. AT&T will nail ur ass and disable your data plan for rest of month. Verizon cannot do that with their lte device or they will face another fine by the FCC. All part of their spectrum deal.
 
How is the Nexus 7 an awesome tablet if you're on your third one? A creaking screen doesn't sound very awesome to me.

Performance/price is why it's awesome.

Quality control is another story. The Android hardware/software is just about there in terms of no lag that has plagued other devices.

It's like ipads that had horrible light bleed. Still awesome device but some people had to return it. My 27 inch iMac with core i7 when it was first released in late 2009 had horrible yellow tinting issues. Apple finally acknowledged this a month later. Still and "awesome" device.

I just think some products are rushed to manufacturing from time of announcement until time of actual product release. It used to be that products would sit in a warehouse for a couple weeks even before the announcement. Now they are literally announcing the product and trying to make the products available to masses within 2-3 weeks and you are going to have quality control issues.
 
According to my experience, 10'' is too large to hold it on the palm, you'll be afraid it may fall any time. So I'd advise you a 7'' version. However, if you need a more powerful and full-scale device, why not to buy an ultrabook. Ultrabooks are more functional than tablets.
 
I'm gonna revive this thread by saying the Nexus 7 tablet is AWESOME. I've had for 3 weeks now and this is a very well made tablet. 7" is perfect for reading , it's kindle thin and super light, battery life is great @ ~8 hours, the android app ecosystem + google play are robust and , last but not least, it fits perfectly into your white coat.

I hated anything android (after having a terrible experience with the HTC Rezound in 2011) but JellyBean on the N7 is solid. In fact, I sold my ipad 3 and am using it as my sole tablet now.

I'm a first year premed and I'm going to buy a tablet but can't decide between Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. My main concern with Nexus 7 is screen size? If I want to view powerpoint presentations will I be able to view them comfortably and clearly ?

I don't get the Galaxy Note(s), isn't it weird to be holding up that huge thing as a phone? I'm not sold on the tablet, so I agree with you on that but I don't see the Note(s) or similar devices as the answer.

I was waiting on the Nexus 10 and now here it is. The only problem is its aspect ratio is 16:10(good for games/movies) while the iPad is 4:3, the 4:3 is more ideal for reading textbooks and journal articles so I'm actually leaning towards that over the Nexus 10.

Mmm I agree I already have a phone I don't need a huge one I just need a tablet cause i know ill use it in uni. I think im gonna go with the nexus 7 since it's not too small nor too big.. Thx guys.
 
Well, I've had the Nexus 7 for 3 months now so I thought I would check in to give an update and to hopefully benefit those who are probably finding this thread while deciding on what to buy.

I love my Nexus 7. It fits in my scrub pocket perfectly. It is lightening fast and I have literally every major anesthesia text on it and at my fingertips. The tablet size now makes it a usable portable library (in addition to everything else of course) in comparison to accessing these resources on your iphone etc.

The screen is higher resolution than the ipad mini but that's about all I know about that device (plus the price difference of course). As for the Android system, I can honestly say that I think I now prefer it to the Apple/iOS world I had become so familiar with (although I continue to use an iphone and have a macbook). Android feels good in a way that reminds me of when I made the switch from PC to Mac.

It really is in my mind (the ubiquitous 5 star reviews online seem to agree) a great device at an amazing price point. That's my 2 cents.

Susruta, the ipad mini is a worthy replacement to the Nexus 7 in my opinion. It is lighter, has much more screen real estate without adding too much size and the camera is awesome for when you need to take random pics of foot ulcers 😉

If you already have a Nexus 7, wait for the next gen iPad mini. The screen resolution just isn't that great if you're accustomed to a retina display.
