hey guys~ what are the advantages of going into the 7 year dental program except that you save one year? you still have to take DAT anyway...plus you still have to go through the same application process.
abs none. I'm in a 7 year program and I still had to prepare just as hard for my dat just to ensure i had a seat. Also my GPA could not fall below a certain point. Also I had to do mandatory research for 1500 hours. I guess a good thing is knowing if you meet the requirements then you're good to go, but if you meet those requirements anyway you have an above average shot at getting into dschool anyway.
im in one right now, and the only advantage is that if you keep the minimum gpa, get the minimum score on the dat, u basically get in. no uncertainty. do the things they tell u to do, u go straight in.
for my school, basically from the day 1 of 1st year, you start off on a planned out undergrad schedule. complete each class with a grade of B or better, while keeping up science gpa and overall gpa above certain level. after 2nd year, take your DAT, get above minimum score required by the program. on your 3rd yr, you turn in your app just like everyone else. by january, you hear back from the dental school you are in the program for about the formal acceptance.
once you are in, in your 4th year, you complete 1st year of dental school w/o a problem, you get your bachelors degrees depending on your major (for my program, everyone has to be a bio major). starting 2nd year, you are just like everyone else in 2nd year dental school.
it might be different in other schools. thats how they roll at mine.
