Question about the 23 y/o schizo female who burned herself and admits she doesn't trust ppl, so she is waiting for her parents to come to hte hospital before she gets treatment..she understands the fact that if she doesnt get treatment she could get an infection

Do you treat her or not, and why?

I believe you wait for her parents because she has proved competent by saying she understands she can get an infection if she waits but still wants to wait

can we just take her words at face value? she has a serious mental illness so how do we know that she really understands the implications or means what she's saying? i'm probably being too picky...

Of course you can, unless there is some reason not to (which there wasn't in the question)

I think the answer mentioned that you dont just wait for her parents to show up, you find out if her parents are on their way or not.

That way you follow her wishes and also establish if she's competent and telling the truth.

That's what I remember, at least.

yeah i chose the dont treat and find out how far her parents are option

Pretty sure the answer was to wait and find out if the parents are coming. If I recall correctly, competence for making decisions on one's own medical management is generally more lenient than other kinds of competence -- for example, someone who might not be "competent" enough to manage to live on their own/manage their own finances can still be considered competent enough to refuse treatment.

Someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong on this -- would hate to be giving out incorrect info.

i say give her the 5,2,50 and admit her to the burn unit.

Yes, the correct answer is A) Do Not proceed with TTT and determine if their paretns are on their way.
"She understands that she has a thought problem and she knew that her leg could get infected if she wait too long, but it would not kill her".
So she is competent (Kaplan notes; Rule 2 "Assume that the patient is comptent unless clear behavioral evidence indicate otherwise").
Clear behavioral evidence would be:
1- patient attempts suicide
2- Patient is grossly psychotic and dysfunctional
3- Patient's mental state prevents simple communiation.
