Hi all. Long time reader, first time poster (in non-trad anyways)

Do you believe it is possible to go from a 2.0 GPA to 3.0 GPA in two semesters (12 credits each semester)? I’m just wondering if anyone has ever done this.

I plan on applying to DO medical school in August of next year. I’m not really worried about EC (have tons), LOR (8 science classes over the two semester, I’ll be able to get 2 or 3), shadowing (I’m shadowing DO doctors/professors of the medical school I would like to attend), or clinical experience (worked in hospital, advance care homes, a year of working in a laboratory).

any advice or personal story would be greatly appreciated 😀

Yes I believe it is possible, but only if you are retaking all the bad grades you have. DO schools have a forgiveness policy where the first grade doesn't count in the GPA.

I retook all my science classes that I did poorly in and got A's in all of them. I brought my Science GPA from a 2.5 to a 3.7. My overall GPA went from a 2.6 to a 3.2.

I'd suggest you make an excel sheet with all your grades and see how many actually retakes it takes to get your 3.0.

It depends on how many credit hours you've taken in the past. The more you've taken, the more classes at 4.0 you'll need to come to a 3.0 cumulative.

Here's a great little calculator that will help you out.

I'm in the same predicament. I screwed around for 2.5 years in college not knowing that in the future I'd be regretting it big time. I'm fortunate that I didn't take any science classes during that time. Now that I'm starting over, my science GPA should be pretty good compared to the non-science.

Woot!
=========
To achieve a GPA of 3.6 given that you have
accumulated 199 credits and have a current 3.387 GPA:

You need 106 hours at 4 to obtain a GPA of 3.6
You need 283 hours at 3.75 to obtain a GPA of 3.6
=========
Only 8 more years of undergrad and I'll be able to goto medical school! 😀 🙄

Allopathic schools average both your original and retake classes together. Osteopathic schools replace the second grade with the first. If you choose to apply to osteopathic schools, the fixing a GPA is much easier.

Here's a hypothetical example:

You've taken 30 credits and got a 2.0 in every class so your GPA is a 2.0. Let's say you retook all of those 30 credits and got a 4.0. For allopathic applications, your GPA would be a 3.0 because the grades are averaged. For osteopathic applications your GPA would be a 4.0. Osteopathic takes the second grade to calculate the GPA. But don't be fooled because they will see both grades and ask you what happened.

It's possible if you currently only have 24 credit hours with a 2.0 GPA and get a 4.0 the next 24 hours. If you are retaking any courses in these next 24 credits than it's a different story and you have a little more wiggle room.

Thanks for all the responses. I actually have 4 more semsters left (SP07, US07, Fa07, Sp08). I'm going to work as hard as I can, get tutors, visit profs and TA more often, and show that Med School is where I want to be!

I took the first step today. I met my advisor today🙂. Had a lot of good advice and told me not to be discouraged. Worst comes to worst, Class of 2013.
