A. Caveman making comments that can be misunderstood as offensive

Anyone taking offense to this caveman should just ignore him. He is just an immature person who thinks he is a man because he can inflame people on an internet message board. Trust me, if you met him in person, he would not be acting like such an immature wannabe badass.

He will either not get accepted to med school b/c he is too immature and ignorant, or he will be taught some maturity in med school.

Think I am wrong? just see what types of high-schooly bad ass insults and threats he throws next. My opinion has nothing to do with the original comment, it is how he responded and handled every other comment since. Maybe he wants Original to meet him in the school parking lot after the lunch bell rings to fight.
 
Interesting hell, Its freaking ridiculous. It wasn't serious. This is generally one of the most supportive of places, althought we have our share of flame wars. I think Caveman has tried to be polite (recent posts) and explain what he meant (albeit without apologies- and thats his right). He doesn't think Minorities are *****s, and thats really plain to see. Sure it may have been crass, but it wasn't racist. Starting a post 'Caveman makes blunt racist remarks' (paraphrasing, it's changed now) THAT is really inflammatory. Now Original, alright, I can understand being upset, but I don't think its fair to equate saying something juvenile as being racist. I guess I disagree with where the definition lies.
 
Oh c'mon at least his posts are a break from the monotony. I think too many people read too literally into things..why do I get the feeling that I will get flamed for saying that :rolleyes:

i don't think your comment is even close to anything that should get you flamed. but just the fact that you think it might should serve to tell ALL OF US what tight asses we can be. because the reason you fear being flamed for that super bland, vanilla comment, is because it's probably happened in the past when such apparently innocuous comments were made. see what i mean. people have to start taking it a little more easy.

You've probably gotten a million messages like this one already, so I hope you do take the time to read this one.

I used to work with elementary school children, and some of them were in a special program for their reading problems. The acronym for the program was RSP -- Resource Specialist Program. Well, kids can be mean, and they would say that the program actually stood for "Really Stupid People." That definition stuck, and many of the kids in the program were upset and lost a lot of their confidence in themselves.

I'm sure you see where I'm headed...URM means U R *****....well....that could stick....

Just to remind you, you wrote, "when i have made sly little comments in the past, i always thought people got it, smirked a little, but moved on because it wasn't that funny. now i'm beginning to think some people just read my comments and move on without understanding them." I want to let you know that I'm one of those people who "got it" and moved on because "it wasn't that funny."

But now there are over a hundred posts on the topic, and I felt compelled to say *something*...

I hope you understand that I'm not attacking you with this post. I just want people to understand why many people took your post so seriously. I wasn't offended because I'm trying to be "Politically Correct." I was offended because what you said was insensitive and could perpetuate ignorance.

Anyways, I hate lecturing people so I'll end this. And besides, I'm way too far from perfect myself to be doing so for so long. I guess we all need to realize that we all (every one of us) need to learn how to be more sensitive especially because we're all going to be physicians. Good luck to you in the future! :p

that's a good point. i wouldn't want that to stick because it IS offensive if you take it out of context. so although my comment did not spawn out of animosity towards URM's (like the kids had when they teased the other kids), it could still lead to bad consequences if it falls into the wrong hands :wink: .

as long as it's clear that i'm a good guy and it wasn't a racist comment, but only a little shot at a newbie, then i'm happy to admit that i don't want that kind of thing perpetuated because it's not my opinion. i should care because i made the comment up, and it can be misused, but not because i'm perpetuating immoral behavior, because i'm not. my comment was not made in that context. bad people are in the world, and if they choose to make fun of someone in such a painful way, then they'll do it with or without my aid in creating that handy new acronym. so i will not 'take credit' for any misusings of that comment. but i will say that i don't condone it, and it wasn't my intention. so i dont' have to apologize for making any bad comments about URMs because i didn't. that's why i've been so defensive. but i will apologize for making a silly, stupid, pretty amuzing comment to a guy (but will i do it again?? what do you think---so would you).

i appreciate good people, trying to make the world a better place. that's what you're trying to do CTKN, and i appreciate it.

I like the chemistry between A. Cavemen and Original. They have that cool hate relationship going. I'd like to see them arm wrestle to settle their dispute for once and for all.

Well it seems somewhat less fuzzy, that you just made a bad-tasting joke that wasn't meant to be rasist. though I still have my doubts i already publically apologized for the headline and as you noted I changed the heading.

talking about cramming, I wrote a friggin' ten page paper in between reading this thread throughout the day. thank God for on-line databases with full-text articles, otherwise I would've been a dead horse much like this thread!

Doesn't the starter of this thread have anything better to do than trying to tarnish someone's good name? Reminds me of the time someone sent a hard copy of something negative said on here to an adcom. Those people need to grow up.

Plus, A. Caveman didn't need my help to get a rise out of many in the past and thus create his own image.

That incident about sending an email to an adcom was an act of cowardness. Though this board is somewhat anonymous, I didn't hide behind a new user name. I'm here to express my reasons as to why I felt the comment was extraordinaryly rude and plus I wasn't the only one that initially felt the remark was outrageous.

I think it takes a strong man with much maturaity to uphold and defend what he thinks is right. If I hear and see something I feel emotionally and physically hurts others, I will express my idea, in writing or in your face, I don't care who else is around. Those that need to grow up are the passives that allow such transgressions without defending themselves or others.

I think the point of this thread has been noted already. Yes I admit that my initial thread title was too harsh, but A. Cavemen admits that his remark was not the smartest thing to say given that his intentions weren't as they appeared.

Up til now I had had extremely good encounters with the E. Lansing people, students and staff. Nothing lasts forever though, westsidespartan.

regardless of what a.caveman said in the first place, in TEN PAGES of this stupid thread, he has explained over and over and over again that it wasn't meant as a racist joke.
