Hey folks,

I have a couple of questions that if any of you find time to answer I'd be very grateful.

1. Is there somewhere I can find an accurate description of the fellowships available within anesthesia? Specifically, what do you do as an anesthesiologist that does a fellowship in critical care? Are you still down in the OR at all? What're you doing all day when you're in the ICU?

2. How does an attending anesthesiologist work? I've seen attendings pop in and out of operations. Do you basically move from room to room supervising NAs and residents as an attending unless it's a complicated case where you would sit in for the whole case? Do you do preops with your residents, NAs?

3. Can you realistically find work as an attending in most cities?

Do you do preops with residents

Sorry. I doubt many people are going to be helpful with your post.

I certainly am not.

But again, to the thought of an academic attending doing the preops with residents...

Actually, in one way, this happens here. We have an attending staffing our residents in our preop clinic. The resident will see the pt and will briefly staff it with our guy (an anesthesia attending, also seeing pts); then they go send the pt on their way. So our attendings do kinda see preops with residents, kinda.

We do pre-ops with residents inasmuch as we discuss them the night before, but no, I don't generally got and see and examine the patient with the resident before the day of surgery. ON the day of surgery, however, I guess we do sort of examine the patient together and go over any findings.

Thanks to those of you who took the time to reply, I really appreciate it. I would still like to know what your perception is of the work of a critical care anesthesiologist? And how about pain management anesthesiologists? Do they work in a hospital or a clinic or both? What kind of work do they do?

bp- If I may ask, what's your background and your intention in asking these questions and those in your original post?
