Hows it going, I have 2 questions

What percentage of DO's end up matching to either a DO or MD residency? I heard it is around ~70% for MD, but how much for DO by itself and especially - how much when they combine? I am assuming some are admitted to both?

Does anyone have the stats to DO matching in AOA that shows individual specialties and how many were admitted/not admitted in each?

I would appreciate, thanks!

I don't have the statistics on hand, but it is common knowledge that if you're interested in primary care, you will certainly find a spot as long as you pass your boards.

Sorry not looking to get into primary care

Let me know, thanks

Then maybe you should at least mention some of the specialties you THINK you are going to want to go into.

General surgery for example. It would be nice if there was a link to all the specialties with stats.

We can show you all the stats in the world, but what it comes down to is how hard you work during medical school. Do well in your classes, own the boards, make some connections, do some research, and with a bit of luck you can match into anything you want.

Anyways here's something that may help:
http://opportunities.osteopathic.org/search/search.cfm

It doesn't show how many people applied to a certain specialty/program, but it at least shows you the opportunities available to you as an osteopathic medical student.

Thanks sinfest, although I have seen those before.

click "match results" on the left and then "2010" all the way at the bottom. It's the pre-scramble matches for the AOA. http://www.natmatch.com/aoairp/index.htm

what is important to see here: somewhere on the website (not specifically the match page) says only 51% of students go into the AOA program, and you can only pick the AOA *or* ACGME. You really (realistically) cant pick both. If you apply to both matches, you actually picked AOA. Thats just how it works.

also important: there are openings (albeit only a few in many cases) pretty much everywhere. If you're willing to go to different areas of the US, you can get the residency you want in most cases, even if you have to scramble.

talking about scrambling... if you look at it, if every single person was willing to scramble, every single applicant should be able to get into an AOA residency. The numbers work out in such a way that the scrambling students, even with the 'internship option' taken out, are less than the open spots. Admittedly, the majority of spots are in family medicine.

just some food for thought.

Thanks for the link DocEspana. Why are there so many more residency spots shown through the link sinfest posted? And DO's can't apply to both AOA and ACGME?

Does anyone have the stats to how many applicants applied to these different AOA specialties so we can get a better sense of the competition?

IIRC the AOA match occurs earlier than the ACGME match, therefore if you match AOA you must withdraw from the ACGME match. Don't quote me on this though, I could be wrong.

exactly as he said. If you match AOA your name is pulled from the ACGME list and AOA matches a month before ACGME.

as for the mismatch... i have no clue. Its prob something to do with the PGY1-2-3-4-5 thing where there can be many PGY1s and a couple fewer PGY4 or 5s. But really, i have no clue. I just know my link is to the national database on residencies released by the US gov't. They know the exact number because theya re the ones paying for it. I imagine the AOA website is accurate too, they are just prob representing the numbers in a different way and i'm too lazy to figure out the difference.
