A fear of mine that I need to overcome...

So, I have some worries that maybe some of you have had yourselves. I am about to graduate with a BS in microbio soon. However, I want to graduate with a certain GPA before I stop taking undergraduate classes. A lot of my friends have graduated and I'm afraid that I'll have to spend another semester in the Fall to accomplish my goal. I'm already a fifth year at the university. If I do, I won't really have anyone around me that I know. So, I'll have to make new friends and find new connections. I seem to have a fear of not having my friends around me/leave me that I know and making new friends. I'll be twenty-three in a few days, and if I take classes after the approaching Summer next year, then I'll be considered a post-bacc basically.

So, what have you guys done, who have had a situation such as this? Have any of you taken classes at the same university you graduated from as a post-bacc? If so, how did you make new connections/make new friends? I know that I can make new friends but does it seem that it becomes harder to make new friends as we get older? I know being 23 is not old at all but a lot of my friends will be gone most likely, if I stay after the approaching Summer. I hope that I won't seem as old to everyone else, if I stay as a post-bacc. Btw, this seems to be a great fear of mine that not only applies to college but to real life as well. Any advice/comments will be greatly appreciated! 🙂

It can be hard to get on without the warm familiarity and security of the friends you have come to know and understand. But before they became these awesome friends, they were strangers too. You found common ground and bonded over that. It applies here as well. This may sound trite but be yourself, be interested in the people around you, be nice and courteous, get involved in the things that interest you. You're bound to find some kindred souls along the way.

On the real man. I'm years older than the OP, bounced around schools, and I'm in a medschool class full of amazing younger students. If I stopped once to worry about friends and how it would come off to others if I were to postbac at my school then I would probably resort to making a ridiculous thread on SDN about it. Oh, wait...

This reminds me of those threads on SDN where pre-meds are worried about not having a social life because of medical school and residency. To the people who have a hard time finding a job, that is the last worry on their minds.

Uhhh I missed the part where anyone cared about you and how great you are lol. Op didn't ask for people to be condescending and look down on his question. He wants advice, and since you apparently never have had this problem I don't know why you are even posting in the thread.

Op if you are worried about making new friends next year I suggest trying to meet people through activities that interest you. Try clubs and inter murals. Even if you don't end up meeting anyone there you can add it to your app.

Once you graduate, your undergrad GPA will never change--regardless of any post-bacc classes you take. So I guess, if you have the money, you'd be right to stay in school. Although med schools will see that it took you 5+ years to graduate. I don't know if "increasing my GPA" would be a legit answer. Maybe someone else knows...

About making friends, yeah-maybe it'll be a little less social year. But it doesn't have to be! Join 2-3 new clubs & you could make lots of friends.

Good luck! Also, I always felt welcomed at the Christian Fellowship Groups. Most schools combine their fellowship with Bible study + dinner+ game night. It's really awesome & people are always the NICEST people I've met.

SAME could be said for Shabbat at Chabad House & the Interfaith Center. Went there often, especially Shabbat every Friday, and loved it.

Unfortunately, I'm quite serious... I know that these are quite petty things to be worried about, but it seems my mind has made them quite a big issue. I know that I need to stop placing importance on these thoughts but it has been quite an overwhelming task attempting to do this and I have been unsuccessful in doing so at the moment.

Yea, but I thought that taking undergrad classes in general whether before or after graduation are factored into your undergrad GPA... correct me someone, if I'm wrong. I guess that I shouldn't be so worried about this issue but it seems that I'm isolating myself more and more because I'm tired of everyone asking me stuff related to med school. I hate having those that know me ask me SO MUCH about my business. I guess that I just need to figure out how to stay "under the radar," so to speak about my plans.

The only reason that I would take undergrad classes after graduation is to raise my undergrad science and cGPA. How did you guys manage to explain to people that you are taking more classes to raise your undergrad gpa? It seems people don't understand this and they just ask you why are you doing this and think that you just haven't graduated with a degree? I'll probably just tell this to those that I know and be honest, so they will hopefully understand... 😏

Yeahh 23 isn't old at all. I'm going to be 22 and I still have (after this coming spring semester) a year and a half left to go to graduate. Honestly, friends are like the least of my concerns. I find most college students really annoying. It's either mommy and daddy are paying for everything so I party all the time a eff around or whatever. Maybe if I wasn't working I would feel differently. Honestly, all you need is a few good friends. It's not like a year is soooo long. Just be casual with other students in your classes idk.
