I am a sophomore now and I should be graduating in 2008.
My first question may be really stupid, but I'm not sure if I understand this. On the NYCOM admissions website it says that to apply the applicant must have a BS. Does this mean that I must graduate before I can apply? Or can I apply my senior year before I have actually completed my BS? Like, could I apply for the class of 2008?
You can apply before you graduate. You just have to finish your BS before you matriculate.
Also, I figure that by the end of my junior year, assuming I apply my senior year, I will have ~3.1-3.3 GPA (at Stony Brook)... I took college courses in high school and did fairly well so I will also have to add those to my GPA. Hopefully I can do fairly well on the MCAT, probably ~30. Are those stats good enough for NYCOM?
Look on their website for their stats. Your GPA will be a little lower than average, but that MCAT would be higher than average. I got in with a 3.2, 3.0 sci, 30Q - not to NYCOM though.
I don't have any volunteer hours yet. Part of the reason for my low GPA is that I work full time plus going to school because I have to pay for school and stuff. Not trying to whine or anything, I know lots of people do it, I just wanted to explain. I work in a pharmacy as a certified pharmacy technician (will be 4 years by the time I apply for med school), will this look good on my application? I was involved with the crew team for school but had to quit due to an injury and I also play club lacrosse for Stony Brook. I have shadowed and M.D., I am looking for a D.O. to shadow. How do all these things look for applying to NYCOM?
All of those things will look good on your app. Just make sure you do some sort of volunteering. It will give you things to talk about in your PS, secondaries, and interviews. And it always looks good to be giving back to the community.
Right now I am currently trying to decide between med school and pharmacy school. I have always wanted to be a doctor but ever since I started working in a pharmacy I have found that I enjoy that too. Both are appealing to me, I am probably leaning more towards med school though. 🙂 So I was just trying to get some information about this whole thing. I'll probably have more stupid questions in the future... hehe. 😉
Good Luck with your decision! They both can be fufilling careers, it just depends on what you personally find more rewarding and fufilling. And how long you want to be in school for.....😉 And I think you can start pharmacy school earlier - you can start pharmacy school in your third year of college! How nice would that be for med school!
