Well, this article will leave you saying WTAF? This man sounds like he was on drugs, his wife likely was as well, and then he negligently kills her and doesn't call 911 for 20 minutes. What a mess. Why is Florida so messed up?

I swear, I don’t know why plastic surgeons are the only doctors who think they can operate on their own family members? It’s no secret they do this all of the time, whereas the rest of us doctors would never think to do so.
I avoid taking care of family members like the plague. Why anyone would voluntarily take care of a family member is beyond me. Talk about uncomfortable family get togethers if something bad happened.

"Oh Timmy, sorry about your mom who is now in a nursing home gorked"

Exception for my mother-in-law. Light on the antiemetics and pain meds.

Did you ever consider that he was surgically molding her to his liking? That's likely why. Down to tiny details like ear cosmetic surgery, from the article.

What if he just wanted her gone? Just saying. Maybe she wanted out of the marriage? Maybe he wanted out bud did not want to lose any of his Benjamin’s?
Who knows.

The above is the difference between various degrees of murder and manslaughter.

I think doing the procedures on your family members is generally fine for simple procedures, but you have to make sure you're doing things safely and by the book.

The problem here is that it's a major conflict of interest. The plastic surgeon is using his own office, staff, and supplies and trying to cut corners to save costs.

Not a good recipe for successful outcomes. No reason that patient should have any complications at all (young, healthy).

It's because I would never trust anyone to do as good a job as I would in my area of expertise. If I didn't think I was the best (at least, in the region) at procedure X, why do it?

Also this looks like classic LAST -- with the wrinkle that patient was injecting herself with anesthetic while also helping perform her own surgery. All kinds of shadiness. I'm not sure she knew the difference between tumescent and full strength as she appears to have had no medical background

This makes no sense. I am definitely not the absolute best at everything I do, does this mean I shouldn't do any of it?

That’s weird. The rest of us are the best at most things we do.
Really, you think you are the absolute best wherever you work at every single thing you do everyday? Literally no one within 30 miles of your location is better at any single aspect of your job whatsoever?

I’m in a niche subspecialty and do probably about 5 or 6 things. And yeah I wouldn’t do them if I didn’t think I was the best or equal with everyone in driving distance. You give up the other things. People come to surgeons for a specific outcome, not hand holding and a good personality — so the pressure is high to deliver that outcome. You cannot be good at everything. Most guys end up choosing between body and face, for example.

I was typing up another response when you posted this, and you added something that was the whole point I was about to make. I'm a family doctor. While I don't think I'm the best family doctor where I live, I don't think anyone is significantly better at what I do.

Are the orthopedic surgeons better at knee injections than I am? Probably. Are they enough better that the complication rate or advocacy is significantly better? No, that has not been my experience and so I still do them.

Are they psychiatrists better at treating the vast majority of psychiatric conditions than I am? Undoubtedly. Is the difference between their care and mine for run-of-the-mill mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety different enough to have significantly different outcomes? Again, not from what I have seen and so I keep treating it.

Now admittedly, as an ophthalmologist subspecialist, you might very well be the single best person at a certain procedure within a decent radius. But outside of less heavily populated areas, I don't think that's true for the vast majority of physicians.

The first paragraph sounds so egotistical. Is this what they teach surgeons?
My boss at the current locums assignment literally told me this. Who says these things to others? Insecure people or people with really large egos which can harm patients. Either one I don’t want on my case.

Well…once you start questioning that ego the story takes a slightly different turn. Now there are people who are equal!😂😂😂

Well then in this situation, why not pass it to someone who’s equal to you?

It doesn’t have to be taught. With plastics it’s pretty easy to see compare my photos to the guy down the street — it’s all on Instagram. Would you want a surgeon who knows his colleague is better at X? It would you want his colleague?

Anyway my initial response was not targeted towards family practice docs or even general surgeons. It was to the poster who asked — why do plastic surgeons feel so comfortable operating on family members.

It’s because I know my results (within my area of expertise) and I can see the results of my peers on their social media and I know that for certain things I would deliver the best or equal result. The result is not really a wishy washy thing — it is crystal clear from our clinical photographs.

Would you pay someone else 10K to do a job that you could do just as well or better by yourself?

Also, so much of surgery is just CARING. Caring enough to take your time, be gentle with the tissue, not cut corners. Obviously you will care more about your family.

Well….from some of the news articles we have read about plastic surgeons maiming and killing their wives, I would beg to differ. 😂 🤣😆.

The problem is, especially when you care, if things start going south, you aren’t going to be thinking as objectively and rationally as someone who’s not attached to the patient. The emotions will get in the way and one will make decisions they would not have otherwise made with strangers as their patients and those decisions could be harmful. We all know about the VIP studies.
Also, you guys are plastic surgeons. You aren’t poor. Are you really trying to save 10K knowing that potentially if **** hits the fan you may not make a rational decision? Spread that wealth man. Do some wife swapping on this one. 😆😆😆😆😆

Short term marriage in Florida. No kids together
Means no alimony
Since no kids together. No child support.

Outside of splitting home process he may have purchased during the housing boom in 2020-2023.

There is very little financial incentive for him to kill his wife

His business was established before he was married to her anyways.

Look. She was divorce mother of 3? He was divorce father of 2? Age appropriate relationship. He could have had some else with no kids

Have no clue what he was doing. If he’s a control freak?

Right, but these are all ANESTHESIA complications, not plastic surgery complications. I don’t fancy myself an anesthesiologist and maintaining sedation while doing surgery isn’t within the 5-6 things I do really, really well. So I would do the surgery straight local (eg, earlobe repair on my mom when she tore her earring out), or at my ASC with an anesthesiologist to worry about that stuff. I don’t let my kids get sedation at the dentist either. People need to stick to their lanes

I don't know if they are all anesthesia complications but I would bet most are. The one that comes to mind is the fat embolism from Lipo/+/- BBL which is not an anesthetic complications. And it seems to me that many plastic surgeson are doing these lipo cases under MAC/Sedation without any kind of anesthesia professional, but I don't k now how common that is and am glad you don't do that.

I just did a quick google search on this and the first link that came up said 88% of Plastic surgeons operate on their family/friends due to the simple fact that they think they are the best at the jobs. And multiple other studies with similar headings. LOL

Yes I’m face only so no BBL. I think that’s the only cosmetic surgery that has an unacceptably high risk of death. Although, I’m not sure that that would change whether the anesthesia is sedation or general, if you stick enough fat in a large vessel, I don’t think there’s much that can help.

I thought that this was a case of a woman addicted to plastic surgery. She had multiple surgeries before meeting Dr Brown, and she went so far as to make her own anesthesia. Was she not originally some kind of assistant of his prior to this? Maybe I am mixing her up with another couple who did the same thing around the same time. The mother of 5 part is really sticking out to me as a detail connected to all those other details.

Do you think this surgeon in question is the best at what his wife was looking to have done?

(I’m sure he’s the best surgeon who also lets you close your own incision)

Why only the face? What's wrong with big beautiful ladies?

Preop IVC filter? I see an opportunity.

Wow. You seem to know a lot about them.
