Hey everyone,

I just finished interviewing last week at a NY program, community hospital. The hospital was beatiful, ample resources, the hours/months of residency seem relatively cush. The PD was fantastic and there seemed to be research opp's in the program. However, one thing I noticed was that out of approx 57 residents (R1-R3) there was only 1 US grad, in addition on the interview day I was the only US grad (out of approx 20). The only neg I can see about this program is that there are limited fellowship opportunities and this place is not well known. But I'm interested in primary care.... hmmmmm so here is the question... if you found a progam that you really liked, would you go if it was 99% FMG?

I'm considering it.....

If you are 100% sure you want to do primary care/hospitalist medicine, then I say go for it! My PD (who I dont really care for too much, but is a smart guy) told us that at times, community programs can be an advantage for those interested in primary care b/c of the contacts you make in the community with private practice groups, especially in a place like NY where it might be hard to get a practice started from the ground up. FMG% means relatively little except that they are probably not well known and are not one of the "elite" programs like cornell or columbia. It does'nt reflect on the quality of the training at all. My home program is a large university based program with top notch training and good fellowship placement that has about 50% IMG's, mainly from south america b/c san antonio has a very large spanish speaking population and the spanish speaking fmg's tend to do very well. They are extremely intelligent and often smarter than the AMG's.
If you are not too hung up on rep then in my opinion, go with the program you have the best feel about and would love to live there!
Good luck, I think you are interviewing at a couple programs i am later in the season, look forward to seeing your interview trail impressions!

I've done some rotations in NY, if you want to PM me the name of the hospital I might be able to give you some insight.

I've done an away rotation at a hospital that had almost 99% FMG... the AMG's seemed happy, but sometimes frustrated, cuz of different reasons...people tend to click to their own groups--- language sometimes is super hard to understand--- ego problems, were some people think that they are smarter than you cuz they probably already did a residency in their country of origin

just to name a few...
AMGs told me that they only took the spot cuz it usually involved a "signing bonus"... more $$$$ could convince us to settle... especially with Sallie Mae breathing down our backs to consolidate..........

If you have more options (unlike myself)... I would definitely investigate futher into the program... cuz 3 years can seem like a lifetime if you make the wrong choice... so try talking to others familar with the program, residents and med students alike.... hey and good luck...

I'm familiar with most of the NY hospitals in Manhattan. If you send me a tell, I can probably give you more information on the program.
