Last week, my professor told us a story about his former student who is a 40 year old white guy and had taken one year of o-chem with him.

He is a mechanical engineer and decided to apply to med schools. So he took the requirements at night for two and a half years. He took the MCAT last year and finally applied for 10 med schools. In the mean time, his company sent him to Korea to fix some problems for 3 month. He just came back from Korea last week and got laid off. In addition to that, he didn't get any interviews from med schools. He was very depressed.

My professor is a chemist and he got laid off 5 times during 30 years of his career. He strongly encouraged us to study hard and get a job which we can get a license.

As a career changer, I feel very lucky to move to a career where I can work without worrying about losing a job.

Just wanted to share...

Is your professor also a white guy? Are you a white guy?

😉 I feel lucky too! Nice post.

Yes, my professor is a white guy who holds Phd in Chemistry from University of Maryland. I am an Asian.

i wouldn't take the "worrying" aspect lightly that you mentioned ... there is always a possibility that you can lose your job for some reason; i have noticed a handful of pharmacists that have lost their jobs due to various reasons

We just lost one for sleeping during his midnight shift... 😴

it probobly won't be too hard for him to find another job though.

crossjb- That's what I would fall victim to, something like that...

That's good comedy.

I feel really good about it as well. I'm not particularly a "career" changer - I've never been a professional. I always felt as though I merely held a spot in an employment position somewhere. Knowing that I will come out of school with something I can actually call a career - especially one where I can help some people - that's good stuff. Good luck to you.

I don't think that asian guy is getting why I asked though.

insipid1979 are you asking because it bothered you that he described someone as a "white guy"? Because Ive come to realize that a lot of people naturally use themselves as a reference when they talk about other people, so they often throw in seemingly unimportant details like race, haircolor, size. So I knew without asking that he was not a "white guy".

I just thought it was funny that he said "40 year old white guy blah blah"...which was a pointless detail and he didn't say what the race was of anyone else in his post.

I knew he wasn't white also...and I was 95% sure he was asian before he answered.

You're not allowed to sleep during the night shift? What kind of tyranny is this!?! I sleep at my mill production job all the time and I'm actually supposed to be doing something all the time. I don't see why a pharmacist couldn't catch a few quick Zs if its not busy and there is a tech/somebody around to notify him when something needs to be done. At the very least it should be a reprimand, not an outright termination. What are your thoughts on this?

You are being paid to work right? If I slept while at work I would expect to be fired.

Plus isn't it a law that a pharmacist has to be present when a pharmacy is open? I don't think sleeping counts.

Don't give me the "being paid to work lecture". If you've gone through and done everything that needs to be done (updated logs, expiry checks, etc) whats the difference between napping or sitting and reading a magazine? I'm not saying it should be a common occurance, but I also don't think it deserves termination.

It seems like common sense to me...
Noone had to give me a lecture for me to realize that if you are at work you should be doing your job...not sleeping.

Sitting and reading a magazine is a little different than sleeping. At least if you are reading a magazine you know what is going on around you. I am pretty sure it is illegal for a pharmacist not to be supervising when the pharmacy is open for business. The pharmacist can't supervise or do anything while sleeping.

I honestly don't see how you can justify sleeping while on the job...

It can all depend on the type of pharmacy I suppose. If you are all alone in a pharmacy then no matter what it's a terrible idea. If its 4am, you have a tech or two with you watching the place and nobody in the store, I don't see the problem if *once in a while* the pharm/one of the techs needs to catch a 30min nap or so, granted that everything is up to date. If a customer comes in it is very easy for the tech to nudge the pharmacist awake. No different then the pharm going off into the backroom to read a magazine while the tech watches the place is it?

You have great work ethic.

I'm not going to argue about this anymore...especially since you ignore the majority of the points I bring up.

I knew what your point was so I answered that way. If the phrase bothered you a lot, I am sorry to indicate the race without any other details. However, that was just a tiny thing that you could have just overlooked.
