I have a 3.9 gpa at U of Oklahoma with major in health and exercise science and minors in chem and zoo. i received my MCAT scores back and i only scored a 28N (VR9, BS9, PS10). I have worked for a doctor's office for two summers gaining lots of experience (x-rays, ekg, lab, taking blood, receptionist, etc.). I was wondering if I would be a good candidate for one of the top post-bac programs like Georgetown, BU, etc?

with scores like that, i would apply to state medical schools. post bac programs are for individuals who have low GPAs but high MCATs. The minimum MCAT requirement is a 27 to be considered for admission. I would suggest AGAINST applying to an SMP, for it would serve you almost absolutely no purpose. SMPs serve the purpose of demonstrating to adcoms that students with low GPAs can be competitive in a medical school environment. Seeing that you have a 3.9 you have already demonstrated that. If you want to be more competitive, just take the MCAT over again in August and apply now to medical school. I doubt you woudl want to pay some 30,000 dollars to improve your stellar grades. however, seeing the consistnecy in your scores, you probably have a really good chance at getting into a medical school in your state, and even some upper tier schools in the country.

unless you are trying to get into Harvard, UPenn, etc. I would definitely apply (to med schools). You are pretty competitive, especially your GPA. I know alot of people who have gotten into good schools with 28.

The whole thing is that I am taking a year off because i am retaking the mcat in april instead of august because i am too busy this summer. I figured if I am already taking a year off, why not do something productive in that year.

Apply to med school this year. While you are applying, do reseach and try to get publication while preparing for MCAT for April 2007 just in case. If you can get a position as a clinical research assistant that would be great.

This way you don't waste $50K since your GPA is no problem. You can earn money while working, get a nice LOR, and study for the MCAT.

im always confused, cause some people mention that you are wasting $50K or osmething along those figured if you decide to take a glide year, what exactly do people mean wasting 50K?

the thing is, you culd get into med school now with a 28N and your GPA. Granted you might not be able to get into top tier schools, state schools are more likely. MD is an MD regardless of where you go in the USA, so why not just apply now and avoid going through that glide year.

If I had your gpa and mcat score i'd be already submitting application and lor's and anticipating interviews. You should be very proud, and feel like you have accomplished something. Seems though, that you are thinking that you have not done well enough to be accepted into a school or someone has mislead you in thinking that you do not have the grades and score to have many interviews. If you think you're not competent enough, then dont apply. But I would think otherwise.

I just wish I had your confidence. I think I will just take a year off, dominate the mcat in april, and do some more work, volunteer and research to make my application that much better

With grades like that I think you are a good candidate for medical school or post-baccs depending on which road you want to take. The choice is ultimately up to you-- there's no harm in trying! Good luck!
