I've been checking out this IRTA fellow at NIH as an option if I do not get in this time around and was wondering if anyone has been involved in this program. If so, what are your thoughts and which institute/PI. There seem to be so many opportunities/labs I don't know where to start. Is it difficult to get into? Is it worthwhile? 👎 or 👍 Any advice is much appreciated.

If you have other research, try to pick something remotely in-line with that. Otherwise, think of the sorts of things that interest you and go with those. The good thing about the program is that the PIs can search your interests to contact you.

cheers and good luck,

im in an IRTA now in phoenix and as far as a "thing to do in a year off before med school" type job it is pretty nice. the pay isnt so hot but the health benefits are badass. ive heard from IRTAs in bethesda that they are worked really hard. im not, my lab is kind of wierd and not that high pressure, but others certainly are. the good news is the experience has come up in all of my interviews and they seemed universally impressed wiht what i was doing, what i had to say about it. my spot was pretty easy to get, i got several emails from other pi's that sounded neat. if you want one youll get one, thats how i understand it.

i would advise you to search labs you are interested in working with and email them to see if they need an IRTA. i got contacted form several labs but emailed the one i wanted and they took me, so dont wiat for a particular PI to get in contact with you. make sure to try and get some contact info, get in touch with a past IRTA to see if they liked it, if the lab totally sucks or if they were worked to the bone, and go visit. they dont all require an interview but its good to see the place. also the paperwork took forever so do this well in advance, it took around 6 weeks after my lab accepted me for my paperwork to go through at bethesda and for me to start

I have an IRTA question as well. I want to apply as a back-up in case I don't get the CDC fellowship that I really want. What do you guys think I should do? Apply now and if a PI contacts me, tell them I'll let them know my decision in May (can I do that?) OR wait until May and if I don't get the other thing, apply then (or is that too late?) ? This whole post-graduation job thing is making my head hurt.

it takes a minimum of 6 weeks to get the irta thing going from the day the PI gives you the go ahead till the day you can start working. i say apply to both, actively seek out an NIH lab you want to work in and get your irta lined up, then cancel the irta if CDC works out or looks cooler
