Hey,

Could you guys help me out? I am trying to decide whether it is worth it to re-take Orgo I this summer at a state university near home. I just graduated and was planning on applying this month (my app should be ready to submit in about a week). I currently have a 3.39 sci gpa, 3.55 cum. Got a 29 on the MCAT- (10V 10PS 9B).

I got a C+ in Orgo I- which is the only C on my transcript, but I've heard that it can really hurt, so I was thinking of re-taking the class starting tomorrow actually. The class ends July 15. So, it would delay my application the middle of July. I think that I need every advantage w/ my stats, b/c I'm an overrep minority, so applying very early is important to me. I do have great LOR's and EC's including winning a Fellowship to do public health research abroad next year.

Do you think it is worth it to take the class to raise my science gpa into the 3.4 range, and delay it by a month? Or is it better to just go ahead and apply with my current GPA very early , like in the next week or two? I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks!

to be honest with you, i really don't think that c+ is gonna hurt you that much. when i applied, my stats were very similar, i had a 3.44 sci and 3.49 cum GPA. also, i had not one, but about 3 c+'s, in gen chem 1, genetics, and ecology. my mcat was also a 29. i applied pretty early in the process, and i seriously think that helped me a lot. u got a solid chance of getting into a school with your stats. i would go ahead and send out that application and hope for the best. chances are, u'll most likely end up getting in this season, which would save u a year if u waited till next summer. anyway, wish u the best of luck. peace.

Apply early. Applying late hurts you a ton with a lot of places. You can write them letters in two months with your new grades

Why would you retake Orgo I if you did better in Orgo II? How did you do in Orgo II?

thanks for the replies.

got an A- in orgo II. But I've heard that a C+ in either section of the course can hurt you... true?

basically-- is there a big difference b/t applying now w/ my 3.39 sci and applying in late July with a 3.42 sci and proof that Ive mastered orgo I material?

personally, i would apply early

Don't apply late, there is little difference between a 3.39 and a 3.42. If it is your only C, then it isn't a big deal. The biggest problem is that your science GPA is a little below average. Howver, you should be fine as long as you apply to a good number of schools.

I agree with Alternative. I got a C+ in calc freshman year, but was told by interviewers that it was an aberration in my grades and was mostly overlooked. My sci gpa was about a 3.45-3.5, don't remember exactly. Just apply as early as possible and to a good range of schools and you'll be fine

what was your MCAT?

Relax, people! I had a D in Calc 2, C- in Phys 1, C in Chem 1 and a W in CompSci.

As long as you show an improvement in your grades over time, you are fine

I had a C in my second quarter of calculus, and a C+ in my second quarter of intro biology. I applied super late, still got six interviews, and two acceptances so far. A C is not going to rain too much on your parade.
