Hey everyone,

I'm new to this site and because I'm feeling rather insecure about my stats for applying to medical school (allopathic) I figured I would post them here...

I am currently a Junior at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. My major is Chemical Biology (basically biochemistry) and as of right now my gpa is a 3.42. I didn't know what i wanted to do with my life when I was a freshman, and as such never put too much work in anything. In the beginning of my sophomore year, however, I decided on medical school and I am hellbent on going.

Anyway, I am studying for the MCAT, and plan to take it in August and then apply to medical school at the end of my senior year (2010).

I volunteered at a local hospital emergency room for two semesters (5 hrs/wk) for my entire sophomore year.

I was recently appointed a paid summer research position at SJU, working in the Neuro lab with a faculty mentor. I am hoping it results in a publication, but research is research. Over the summer I will also hold another hospital volunteering position.

So, I have 3 semesters to bring my GPA up, and it has been going up every single semester since I came to college. How am I looking, assuming I do alright on the MCAT (30+).

Thanks for you time

It's hard to tell without knowing how many credits you've taken and how many you plan to take those last 3 semesters. What is your expected GPA?

Congrats on the upward trend. I think you'll be fine if you continue your performance your last 3 semesters and do decently on the MCAT. You should try to shadow a few docs, grab a leadership position if you don't have one, and obtain some nice LORs. You can do it. Good luck 🙂.

Thanks for the encouragement!

In the next three semesters I will be taking an 18 credit courseload, so there is a lot of potential to get my gpa up. My goal is to get it to a 3.5, which won't be easy because of my freshman year grades (which weren't terrible, just enough to make a 3.7 or so impossible without taking post-bac classes), but I know I can do it.

I am running for president of my school's chemical society, but if I don't get the spot I will still aim for some other position (treasurer, etc).

I will also be doing undergraduate research during my senior year and already know of 3 professors in the science departments that will give me solid LORs.
