I'm sick and tired of all these arrogant and pompous pre-meds constantly complaining about having to take African American history. You know what if you're one of them suck it up, I'm required to learn about white history all the time😡

You don't see me complaining.
Ranting relieves a lot of anger. I feel much better now, I have to go study for my P-chem exam. later.

thanks for your relevant and cogent musings. please keep them coming sister.

fortunately for me, i have a choice between minority cultures and asian cultures. :meanie:

🙂

hmm, i didnt have to do either. are we talking about college here?

Dang... I took that course for fun(P/F) as an elective to fulfill the writing recs! It was cool. The one they made me take (kickin and screaming) was the full year of freshman english... What a total waste! Ended up takin the full year during the summer before my junior year. YUCK!!! I kept trying to tell them that "pre-med Electrical engineers DON'T need English classes". "Besides", I said. "The writing sample on the MCAT isn't that important anyway!" 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

The next logical topic for this thread is none other than that of affirmative action and how we need more of it because life just isn't fair!

I didn't have time to take a single history class in college because my major did not afford me many electives and I used them all up in my year abroad. Being forced to learn anything you don't want to is not fun (I hated Technical Writing), but I think we could all use more history of any kind.

I'll get off the soapbox now.

People complain about that? I wouldn't mind taking the class at all. Unfortunately, I'm already done with school.

Really? I'd shoot someone if I was forced to take a class like that. Just sitting through ethnic studies I felt in pain. I barely scraped an A just because it was sooo easy, not because I gave a damn.

Cultural sensitivity is great and all, but to force students to take them? No thank you. Let's have a White history course!!

Or, the next logical step for this thread could be something along the lines of affirmative action and how we don't need it because it's reverse discrimination...(sigh....)

let's keep this peaceful. eh?

I dont know, I just finished my Afro American class and I've gotta say it was so unbelieviably boring. I like history - but good lord did this class go slow. And yes, I complain about having to take that class - but - I also complain about having to take that damn french class - and that super slow english class. The point is, for most students that complain about classes they dont like (ME), it's not because it's a "afro-american" class - it's because I dont like being forced to take certain classes I'm not interested in.

In summer session 1, I'm taking 2 writing courses, it's because my writing sucks and definitly needs improvement - I'm not complaining because I want to take those courses.

So yeah - I dont know if tehre's any relation whatsoever, but I felt like complaining about my required courses.

I think that this is very interesting...When I was an undergrad. at Columbia, we were forced to take these courses that centered around Locke, Hobbes, Plato, Homer, and many, many other white philosophers of long ago...I must admit that I did complain. However, I can understand where Roy7 is coming from...My complaint didn't concentrate on the color of the subjects being studied. Rather, it centered on my disinterest for and irritation of the philosophers we were required to study..I can't even count the number of times I fell asleep in class while my professor discussed Montesquieu, or the number of bon fires I wanted to have with these useless books...

Perhaps, unlike you, it's not a race issue, but rather a 'boredom with a forced class' issue. And to think, the rest are all arrogant and pompous?

I've been taking those since I started school. They're boring, moreso than I imagine for a course with some unusual material and diversity.

I don't like wasting my money or time on useless chit.

Didn't you hear? If it's not LABELED for a minority group, it's there for the white man. Not BET? then it's white entertainment television. not February? then it must be one of 11 "white months"......it makes total sense!right?

No... It doesn't make total sense... February is a "white" month. Don't believe me? just take a look at the pic I attached? It's a weather report for tomorrow. Snow on the East coast!!! Most definatly a "white" month... Atleast for you guys on the East coast... Nice golden brown here in SoCal. 😛 (if this isn't funny then sorry. It is to me... but thats because I don't understand the month reference... and cuz I'm in SoCal)

We need to divide up the school year equally!

Everyone needs to rotate through the following cultural courses!!

White
Asian
Black
Hispanic
Misc.

But wait, those are some BROAD categories! We need to further subdivide! 🙄

I think cultural sensitivity is a GOOD thing, but when it just goes too PC I think it actually makes racial tensions more terse.

Little Johnnie's teacher asked him how his weekend was.

"Horrible, a car hit my dog in the ass," he said.

She said, "Rectum."

"Wrecked him?" Johnnie said. "Damn near killed him!"

Isn't that what you're doing right now? I do think it's kind of annoying how we've learned no history in med school until black history month, but I got used to that in grade school where the same applied.

In any case, this thread adds nothing to pre-allo and I'm closing it.
