When you apply, do schools check the ethnicity you chose on the MCAT? I want to apply as 'Other', but I don't remembering seeing that as an MCAT choice. Is the AMCAS application different in this respect?

Thank you

They dont care, thats on the mcat just so they can send you mail.

There is a section to identify your race/ethnicity on AMCAS under "biographical information." I don't remember if there was an "other" option, but there could have been.

Thanks for the replies.

1) Does anyone know if you can choose "Other" and explain on the AMCAS application?
2) Do medical schools see the ethnicity you chose when you signed up for the MCAT (through AAMC), or only what was on the AMCAS?

No, there is no "other"

2) No they don't see what you said for the MCAT.

Thank you for the helpful reply! Weird of them to not offer an other, I think.

They offer pretty much every race/ethnicity and give an option for "other" in almost each one. You can also select more than one if you are of mixed descent.

Seems to me that you are a non-urm trying to get a boost in your app by not putting your race. If you are a urm you would want that to tell your exact race instead of other so that you could get recruitments, schloarships etc.

Well of course you can "select" other by just not choosing any race/ethnicity (i.e., leaving all of the boxes blank). The question wording says it's optional after all. However, whether you should or shouldn't do this is another question...

As with other tests, the testing agency publishes results stratified by race, sex, college major, etc. So, self-identifying is helpful but, of course, is optional. If you prefer not to self-identify, leave it blank. If you feel your race is not represented among the choices, you are such a rare bird that you won't fit into any of the subgroups for analysis anyway so you might as well skip the question.

I do have a question: is it possible to click more than one box so as to indicate mixed heritage?

I'm hispanic! So I mark ethnicity as Hispanic/Latino...but what do I put down for race? Can I leave that part blank and just put Hispanic?
