Hi there. This has been a great site for getting hard to find answers. I am prior Army and have a question concerning one's DD-214.

I was wondering if adcom's will ask for a copy of my DD-214 when I apply to med school, and, if they do ask for it, which form of it will they want, the long form or the short form?

Thanks,

JJ

I was honorably discharged on October 17, 2002 for medical reasons. To be honest I don't want to discuss the medical conditions of my discharge with an adcom because I do not want to show any weaknesses that may hinder my being accepted. However, I do want to present the fact that I served my country with honor.

So, for any of you ex-military who have gone through the process of applying to med school, did the adcom ask for your DD-214? If so, long or short version?

Thanks,

JJ

Wasn't an issue for me either. I don't think they asked for any proof of my time in the Air Force.

Nope, they didn't ask for mine either.....I not sure they would even know what a DD-214 is, unless you get some former military doc on your admissions board. Even then, I doubt they'd ask, they'd just ask what you did.

Member copy #1 of the DD214 contains only the first 22 boxes, and does not contain characterization of service or discharge information.

You automatically get copy #1 (of 8) and must initial to get copy #4, which contains boxes 23-30.

If they ask for the DD214, give them copy #1. No one ever asked me for that, at the school anyway. You may need it for state scholarship money or GI Bill stuff though.

Hey y'all...

Thanks for the quick replies, and I'm glad to be alleviated of my concerns.

Sheet #1 must be the short form I was talking about, and Sheet #4 must be the long form.

Thanks again for getting me an answer so fast. I'm much obliged to y'all.

They didn't ask me about it either.

At my separation class, they did recommend filing a copy with a county courthouse, so you always have a record of the DD214, in case your multiple copies get lost.

Funny, at my TAP class they recommended you NOT file it at the courthouse due instances of identity theft!?! I made a dozen copies and put a couple in my parent's fireproof safe. Figured that would keep me from having to drive to some jack@ss' house and pop a .22 behind his kneecap for getting a Discover Card in my name. Know what I mean?

Yeah. At my debriefing they also advised to have it placed at the county court house so it doesn't get lost. I just keep it in a fire proof safe, though.

Problem with registering the DD 214 at the county courthouse is that it then becomes a public document, to which others have access to (at a minimum) your SSN and personal service info. I have certified copies at home and keep my original in a safe deposit box.

That's an excellent point denali. I never thought of that, but I'm really glad now that I didn't register at the courthouse as advised by the military. Thanks for the info.
