Hi PD,

Can a LOR from the PD (the PD from that school, not the home school) make a difference (i.e. get an interview)? Not a generic letter, but a very personal letter. (Because the student work with him directly for couple months and published some papers with him by the end of the away rotation)
Assuming the student applying for a very competitive field at one of the most competitive schools.

Of course. In a competitive field, likely the PD's all know one another. A great letter from a PD will likely help you at most programs. Go for it!
