okay i just finish my senior year thank god , and i just received my final gpa .My final gpa is a 2.98.i look on here and see alot of people have posting where they say they have low gpa and they have like 3.5-3.8 lol.But i have to take some more sceince classes so i can atleast meet the requirement of the two schools that i'm looking at... the school that i'm looking at are Nova And Lecom-Bradenton.. i spoken with someone adimission at LECOM and she told me they only look at your sceince gpa and that it.. I had that gut feel that that wasn't right... but do anybody now what the cutoff for gpa for these schools.... because i was going to spend $5000.00 on the kaplean course for the MCAT this summer, and i don't want to spend that type of money and don't even have a chance. Also what can i do to overshadow my low gpa? I need clinical experience but i don't have no idea to go to get it.... 😕

What is your major? If you've graduated and you still haven't even finished the pre-reqs then i would say you don't really have a chance unless you take another year. And that lady has no idea what she's talking about, they look at everything.

Seems like you haven't really put much thought into all this.....

that pretty tuff but thanks i ask for that ...... but anyway my major Was Physical Education with a Concentration in Exercise Science...Also when i looked at their website it clearly say that you must have atleast 2.75 in science course... But there are some schools that have a cutoff on who they consider for a interview based on their gpa's.And i have put though into me going to med school, but thanks for your time.

Since when does the Kaplan course cost 5k? It was about $1600 for me...

I would redistribute some of your resourses away from the KAPLAN program and into post-bac classes. If your GPA is under 3, how do you expect to do on the MCAT. The MCAT tests you over the same stuff you learned in undergrad, which you obviously do not have a firm grasp of. Take some more classes to boost your GPA.

i was actually looking into doing that post bac classes at LECOM-B.I actually though you couldn't improve you gpa once you've finish college, but do students that do post bac classes have a good shot at getting into the school that they did their post bac at??

Schools vary. It's probably best to ask the school you'll attend what guidelines they use before they guarantee an interview for med school consideration. Any post-bac classes taken that are not required for a graduate degree are included in your undergrad cumulative GPA, even if you've already graduated.

thanks for that info because i really didn't know that, but what about clinical experience..I 'll be moving to Orlando Florida, and i don 't know anybody there, so do you have any idea where i could go for the clinical experience

Call the volunteer office of local hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and mental health facilities. Also consider crisis hotline, suicide hotline, or homeless shelters where many have mental illness. If you are in a formal post-bac program, they often assist you to find volunteer opportunities.

A 2.98 in P.E. huh? Sounds like you need to rethink your career path.

at first i really thought this guy is a troll, but the more i read the more i think he is not... Anyway, OP, did you take any prereqs yet? how did you do in those?

I say don't take the kaplan course anytime soon, do some clinicals and shadowing first and decide if this is what you really want, maybe these experiences can become some sort of fuel for you to ace the mcat!

:luck:

Ooohh, don't spend that much money on a Kaplan course. A lot of people I know say that it doesn't help. I just bought the review book for $25 dollars, which is great and in color. The best thing to do, is just practice with as many tests you can find and become an expert on the way the MCAT is set up. Especially focus on the verbal reasoning. It is tough! Everything else is just memorization, hopefully from your undergrad classes. And kudos to you for pursuing a medical career while being a father and working. I can barely handle the rigor of the course work by myself. 🙂

I'm pretty good when it comes to verbal reasoning. One of my frineds took the kaplan course, and he wasn't the the sharpest tool in the box, but he made a 36 i think. He bought the kaplan course for 5k. Everytime i look on sdn i always see posting where people talk about how great the course help them, but i always see other posting stating it a waste of money lol 😕.So what i'm trying to do is to find something that can help me out because i will need someone that i can ask question to about different things. And honestly i'm really trying to avoid spending 5k on the kaplan and it turn out to be a real big waste.😡 If you can recommend anything for this it will be really helpful. thanks

You can take the Kaplan or the Princeton Review course for ~$1600 without the tutor and unlimited practice tests. That should be fine if you are competent.

With regards to your grades: have you taken physics and math--you didn't list them on your pre-med grades above? If not, you should not be taking the MCAT before you take physics. You may be a good candidate for an SMP or postbacc program to help pick up your grades and prove that you can handle a rigorous courseload. If you need to stop working to do this, you need to stop working and arrange other means to support your family. You point out that it's hard to get good grades when you have a wife and kids...but medical schools are going to wonder why you think having a family will be any easier when you are there. You may not be working an outside job (or 2) while in med school, but the financial and energy strains it poses on families creates comparable stress. So, you should ideally have two terms of a full, rigorous courseload in which you receive good grades in order to prove to schools that you can handle medical school...if you have only ever taken one pre-med pre-req at a time, I suggest you look into an SMP to get the opportunity to prove yourself...unless your P.E. degree is far more difficult that I expect.

i have viewed the post bac at lecom-b, and that will be my last resort if i can't get into DO school with my current stats., but what exactly is smp???? the financial part wouldn't be a big issue with my family because that will be well taken care of, so no stress there thank god.. if i do get accepted to a DO school i know i will do wonderful because i will only have to worry about school and that's it. when i was attending undergrad there was alot of other stuff on my plate, and plus i was taken 18 hours each semester.. but thanks for your comment and advise
