How did you decide you wanted to go into medicine?

Now, don't give me the b.s. you'd give an admissions committee like "wanting to help people". Garbage collectors "help people" too.

I want to know the real reason you're interested in medicine.

Money? Prestige? Job security? Excitement? You like applied biology? You're drawn to the power of manipulating someone's health with surgery and/or drugs? Your mom or dad is a physician? Perhaps you watched ER regularly and thought medicine was "cool" profession? All of the above?

Seriously, give me a no-b.s. answer.

Woah, O.P. From the paucity of posts according to your profile, it seems that you signed up and waltz your way in here, asking for answers with a gun pointed right at our faces!!! Geez, but man, chill.

In addition, it seems that you signed up just to answer this question. If you search other threads by typing in "why you wanted to become a doctor" "why you wanted to be an MD," I am sure you will find some answers that way. Plus, I believe there is a thread where you can put up a rough draft of your PS and have others comment on it.

And if you want a school administrator/admissions perspective, I suggest be on the look out for LizzyM. Her opinions are highly respected on SDN.

I feel as though my sense of moral and intellectual superiority should be backed up by paper.
 
I'll be honest with you here. I wasn't planning on entering medicine, but I had no idea what I wanted to do. So, since I can't really think for myself, I posed the question "Why medicine?" on an anonymous internet board. A person there gave me very convincing answer, and thus I decided to become a doctor. I even used this guy's reasons in my personal statement!
 
Personal statements are looming heavily over anxious premeds, and we've already seen a few new posters coming on here asking for our ideas as to why they should want to go into medicine. Please, new posters, do not keep flooding the boards with these questions. We're not going to do all your work for you. Or, at the very least, use the search button. I'm sure there have been people who accidentally helped prewrite the personal statement of others. Why not just feed off of that?
 
Hey, despite what you may think, OP, most of us who get into medical school do so because we really want to be doctors.

If you're doing it for the "non bs" reasons, you'd probably be better off in another profession. Medicine simply requires too much committment and sacrifice. Doing it to live up to personal ideals are the only thing that make going into it reasonable.

Actually, my personal statement has been taken care of.

That aside, I'm sad to see there are lots of people here whose knee-jerk reaction to a very direct question is to respond with smart-alec answers; worse, people who confuse smart-alec answers with wit and intelligence. Not one of you actually provided an honest answer. Instead, each post was an attempt to outdo the sarcasm of the previous.

Unbelievable!

It's a simple, straightforward question. If you don't want to answer it, why go out of your ways to be obnoxious?

This is not what I would consider to be a "straightforward question."

I mean, seriously - I think I went through five versions of a personal statement, that all attempted to answer this question.

How did I decide I wanted to go into medicine? I have no friggin' clue. Maybe I was drugged, but I really have no idea what I was thinking back then.

I can give you lots of reasons of why I can't leave medicine now, but that's probably not what you want to hear.

I've always been fascinated by Forensic Pathology (no, not because of CSI, my father is State Patrol and introduced me to the idea when we were discussing the multi-faceted approach of law enforcement), so naturally medical school is one of the career paths I'm considering.

I once heard of a person who wrote a personal statement that consisted of: And I thought about medicine. And I thought why not.

Hm . . . . On the other hand, I don't think that person made it into school, but it was honest.😀
 
I saw on Scrubs that you can get a lot of free pudding. Now don't get me wrong, I love pudding, but the only thing better than pudding is well...free pudding!
 
I guess it was to make my family proud. And for my own ego, hehe... and because I like giving people advice and telling them what to do. 😛 And because it gave me the excuse to work hard in school ('cuz being a nerd isn't fun but it has its perks when you tell yourself it'll be worth it in the end).

Explanation of failing grade: The line "Now, don't give me the b.s. you'd give an admissions committee like "wanting to help people". Garbage collectors "help people" too" in addition to the fifth paragraph line in your original post constitute an assumption that I am not willing to accept. If a person offers up the statement that they are going into medicine to help people and explains specifically why medicine will lead them to that end, then their answer is not "b.s." If you think that it is, then you are lacking a fundamental understanding of the humanism at the very core of a career in medicine.

Personal statement SHOULD be personal.. Why post a question in a PUBLIC forum to ask for answers to your P.S? It should be called Public Statement NOT Personal Statement anymore....??:meanie::laugh:
 
SideshowMel - In all honesty dude, you are in need of some serious help because if this is your attitude towards getting a personal statement, then your lack of effort and laziness is going to shine through like a light house in other aspects of you application. You may be blind to it, so be careful and look at the way you are presenting yourself for applications. Hate me now but please do remember to thank me later.

Oh yeah you want a reason -> white looks really good on me and it is kind of my colour so what other job lets me wear a white coat. See. Top that man.

i'll give a serious answer.

simply, it's what i want to do.

every aspect of medicine is attractive - the challenge, the prestige, getting to meet people, the sense of purpose and accomplishment, helping others, the human sciences, job security, etc. - but you can find those in other professions as well.

my own, personal desire to be a doctor is... well, ineffable for one. you can't really attach reasons to why you love someone, how can you expect to do the same with a lifelong ambition? if you're not doing this because you wholeheartedly believe that it'll make you happy, then you're bound to question your own motives in med school. or worse, after med school.

i'm not sure if its possible to incorporate that into a personal statement though, which is why i posted it.
 
The fact that I probably wont get boring. The compensation, and the stability. And the chance to make a difference in the community. Also because I think I will make a good Dr.

PS: I dont care if someone uses this for their personal statement because...that would just be dumb :/
