A straightforward question. Looking for honest answers.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i'll give a serious answer.

my own, personal desire to be a doctor is... well, ineffable.

OP, don't use ineffable in your PS. They'll assume you paid someone to write it for you. Or copied it off a dubious corner of the internets.

My answer: I like being about to tell people they're idiots when they're not. House gets away with it all the time.

Actually, my personal statement has been taken care of.

That aside, I'm sad to see there are lots of people here whose knee-jerk reaction to a very direct question is to respond with smart-alec answers; worse, people who confuse smart-alec answers with wit and intelligence. Not one of you actually provided an honest answer. Instead, each post was an attempt to outdo the sarcasm of the previous.

Unbelievable!

It's a simple, straightforward question. If you don't want to answer it, why go out of your ways to be obnoxious?

I dunno WHY I want to go into medicine, but people like you are one of the main reasons why I DON'T want to...

Oooohhhh, ouch.....arrrrgh.....I'm grabbing my chest here....collapsing to the ground from the agony of your direct, stabbing insult.

What the hell do I have to do with your interest in medicine?

Enough with the smart-alec comments, mister. Trying to outdo the sarcasm of previous posters?

Just curious, how does it feel to create an utterly failed thread?

At first I wanted to be an Architect, but I realized that it was hard to make any significant amount of money in that field. Then I wanted to do industrial design (automobiles), but once again money was an issue. AND then I wanted to do dentistry, but I realized that I do not want the burden of opening a practice. Finally, after several talks with one of my parents, I decided on medicine. Money is a huge factor as I come from a lower-to-middle class family. After three years of undergrad I have come to realize that there is not much else that I can do with my education that seems worthwhile. I find the human body to be extremely interesting. Understanding how it functions, how it fails, and how it can be repaired fascinates me. Helping people really did not play a role in my choice, but if I can help someone in the end then that is fine with me.

to sum it all up:
1) Financial stability.
2) Higher understanding of the human body.
3) "Helping people."

Fine, after being such a "smart alec" on this thread, I figured I'd finally answer the OP's question truthfully.

I decided to go into medicine so I could ask people for a cup of their own urine and not have them call the cops.

I think your limited intelligence is preventing you from grasping the idea of a generalization of character.

If you had an unselfish reason for asking this question, you wouldn't come on here demanding answers and providing nothing in return. You can't expect people to give you any respect if you are demanding the answer to a question that is selfish if you don't provide your opinion as well.

I'm sure you're going to love a career dealing with people, seems like you have a very empathetic and genuine personality.

PS:
"What the hell do I have to do with your interest in medicine?"

Oh the sweet irony... you're trying to manufacture your interest in medicine from other people. (If you weren't, you would give us your general reasoning behind pursuing a career in medicine)

Ouch!!! Hit her where it hurts!!!

GRANDSLAM!!!! There were some serious steroids behind that hit!

Honestly?

In my personal statement. . I wrote an essay on this fact:
Many years ago I decided I DIDN'T want to go to med school.
Then I expanded on the fact that I have a duty to go . to my friends, my family. . everyone who sacrificed to give me the opportunities I have. . . I owe them to make something out of myself. . .especially something that will come in handy for them down the road.

But I don't really WANT to be a MD. I just will be.

I'm trying to set a world record for the most academic abbreviations after my name. I've already got MBA, PhD, JD, DDS, and PharmD. MD is the next one I suppose.

Money? Prestige? Job security? Excitement? You like applied biology? You're drawn to the power of manipulating someone's health with surgery and/or drugs? Your mom or dad is a physician? Perhaps you watched ER regularly and thought medicine was "cool" profession? All of the above?

Seriously, give me a no-b.s. answer.

To be honest, I was looking for a job that paid very well, had high prestige, decent job security, was exciting, and applied something I learned in school. Also, my mom is a physician. I also just really enjoyed watching House and Scrubs after dinner. My eye sight isn't good enough to be a fighter pilot, so it pretty much ruled out any other career. And that's my no-bs answer.

i'll give a serious answer.

simply, it's what i want to do.

every aspect of medicine is attractive - the challenge, the prestige, getting to meet people, the sense of purpose and accomplishment, helping others, the human sciences, job security, etc. - but you can find those in other professions as well.

my own, personal desire to be a doctor is... well, ineffable for one. you can't really attach reasons to why you love someone, how can you expect to do the same with a lifelong ambition? if you're not doing this because you wholeheartedly believe that it'll make you happy, then you're bound to question your own motives in med school. or worse, after med school.

If it's ineffable, what's the point of the interview? 😵
