Hey Everyone,

I fell ill in the middle of a term and was unable to complete it, therefore receiving 'W' (withdrawn classes do not factor into GPA, of course) grades for all of my credits. These courses have subsequently been repeated with excellent academic results.

My question is, will this adversely affect my chances next year when I apply, and if so, what steps would you recommend to improve this situation?

Thanks for all the input!

Check if your school has an academic petitioning process first! At my school, if you are ill, then you can bring a doctors note and petition to have the courses removed permanently from your transcript.

Address it in your personal statement or, when asked for secondaries they will usually offer a section where they ask you to tell them anything you feel they should know. If they don't, include a separate letter with your secondary detailing what happened. If you have a good explanation for it then you need not worry about it.

I don't think you need to do anything beyond this as it sounds like you have a good reason and you've made up those courses. Adcoms are human and understand that "stuff" happens.

Yeah, I had 5 Ws on my app because I transferred from one grad program to another mid semester...plus I had a few Ws on my undergrad transcript. I never addressed in any essay and was never asked about it at interviews. I dont consider myself an outstanding candidate....maybe a little below average in UG stats and a little above average in terms of post grad grades and research experience and I got in, albeit off a waitlist...so take my situation at face value since I dont know what your situation is exactly.

Best of Luck!
