I've got a question. I got my genetics grade and I got an A, but I was less than 1 point from an A+. I looked at the answers to the exam and I am positive they marked me wrong on a right answer or just added up wrong. Any sense in trying to see the prof and have him look at the exam, and if there was a mistake, change the A to an A+?

my thoughts exactly. A = 4.0, A+ = 4.0, caring about the difference = one of those douches cerebus was talking about :laugh:

If it matters to you AT ALL, go ahead and make a professor go through crap to change a grade that won't affect your GPA in the least! I'm sure the prof will appreciate your enthusiasm. I just hope he/she doesn't confuse it with anality!!

It's not worth it. If it were the difference between a B+ and A- maybe. But A/A+ isn't going to make a difference in your GPA. Use the time to do something else. As a matter of fact, instead of trying to get that A+, why don't you instead try to get a letter of recommendation from your prof. I can guarantee you that if you try to get that A+, that prof is NOT going to write you the best rec that he/she can and I can promise you that a good rec is going to make a lot more difference than A/A+.

Already in Debt- already 1+ year at a free clinic, maybe instead of giving us babies advice you followed some of your own, you'd have an admission.

The great thing is, I'm not even sweating it. I will make sure to take the time to pm you when I get my first acceptance 🙂 After that, I'll resurrect this thread so you can personally apologize to me. Until then, grow up!

Wow, for not sweating it, you sure are taking a lot of time and energy to keep responding. As for bitterness, bringing up this thread when you finally get it really shows your true colors. Good luck in life man.

Also, my true color is a tanned brown - bronze almost. Still going to resurrect this thread, though. It will be funny. Let me know how the quest for the A+ goes, ok?

Hmmmmm. I dunno why people have to be so rude... I know a few people who would confront the prof looking to get the A+ instead of the A... it doesnt make them bad people. Though I'll admit in this case, the guy was pretty rude, on the other hand you were very antagonistic first.

But now I have a question... those people saying an A+ and A are same on gpa... am I wrong, or doesn't an A+ count as a 4.2 and A = 4.0? Am I wrong on this?
 
UCIPMED is just asking a question and I think it is a good question, 1 pt is almost nothing to change a grade. I ve been in the same situation a couple of times and I was wondering the same thing. Obviously it doesn't factor into ur GPA, but it is still visible on ur transcript.
 
Finally. People with some sense. I was beginning to think I was the only one who took the question seriously.
 
my school doesn't give A+'s, the highest we can get is an A. does this mean that i have no shot at med school because there are people out there with higher GpA's than a 4.0?? 😱
 
Well, AMCAS won't acknowledge an A+, so the question is pretty moot for med school.

I, for one, think that it's pretty lame to try to wheedle an A+ versus an A. Isn't there something that you would rather be doing with that time?
 
I think his question is legit (even though he was kind of rude about it). If it means that much to you, UCI, then get the grade changed. Just remember that it won't have ANY effect on your getting into medical school. I agree with the others who say that getting the grade changed is basically destroying your chances of an LOR from your prof. An LOR from a genetics prof would be impressive. 🙂
 
i'm a TA at UCI this year and i was lucky that i only had a few kids who were thirsty for a higher grade and were looking to have me regrade things after the quarter was finished!! haha

but in any case; most of the students I had were as cool as cucumbers and accepted the grades they deserved...

i suppose the OP should grab that extra point to get an A+ cause it would stand out and look impressive; but then what was the point of him posting this in the first place; we all know that he was gonna ask the prof anyways

its funny how human/pre-med behavior operates

but i think the problem with uci in particular is that there is just one bio major; the idea is great: giving students a taste of all the disciplines involved in biology; but this creates stiff competition, people tearing out journal articles from the library so nobody else could have them, cheating using the cell phone cameras and sending an image of your answers across the room to your homie...etc. etc.. i'm not saying its prevalent outside UCI; but this type of cutthroat behavior is evident moreso over here than the other schools i've studied at
 
i dont' know how this works in the UC's, or how well the prof knew the OP, but if you're borderlining, doesn't the prof usually take into account any improvement that was made, effort, if a person had a bad day on a test, etc. at my school, more than just numbers *usually* decide a grade, unless it's a huge intro to bio class, where the prof knows nobody. but our genetics class is pretty small, ~30 students per class, and only one section, so the prof knew all of us and the amount of work we did.
 
The classes are much bigger, so one can't expect that the professor would take improvement/hard work into account. There were about 200 people in my genetics class, and I think it would be the same at UCI.
 
The class has about 350 students. I didn't know amcas would not count the A+, so thanks for letting me know. I was thinking more along the lines of when I try to apply for grants for my research and scholarships. I think an A+ would look nice there. As far as the cutthroat stuff at UCI, I don't think its any more prevelant than at any other school, but it gets talked about so much as UCI because the competition is so stiff that over time UCI has developed this reputation of being a school full of anal pre-meds. I think I'm pretty competitive, just like any other pre-med, but I have not seen or heard anybody doing stuff like tearing out journal pages or checking out all the copies of a text so no one else can study. I think for the most part, top UCI pre-meds are more than willing to help people out, but when the B or C students make up stuff like this, it really does not make us want to help anybody.
 
Jesus Christ! There are pre-meds at UCI who resort to tearing out journal articles and **** like that to screw over other students! Incredible, man. Just freakin unbelievable. What a supreme irony for pre-meds to be malicious, when medicine is the quintessential service-oriented, altruistic profession. What the hell is wrong with those people?
 
Don't believe everything you hear. I am willing to bet that stuff like that happens very rarely, but people talked about it so much it spreads like wildfire. Just an example, a couple of my friends are really strong students and we talk about this stuff and we all agree its just gossip. Anyways, I don't even know if there is a possibility to screw over people. Journal articles are all available online and everybody buys their own book.
 
I think all the gunner-bashing here is getting out of hand -- UCIPMED is justified in wanting to upgrade his (or her) grade from A to A+. Hey, if you earn an A+, you deserve and A+. At my school, there is a policy in some departments which strongly encourages profs NOT to give "borderline grades" like 79, 84, and 89, because student complaints about such marks are often legitimate, and assigning final grades just 1 point below the next letter grade is viewed a pettiness on the part of the professor. Last year, I took a Roman History course, and all our evaluations throughout the semester were letter grades. However, when it came down to assigning a final mark for the course, the prof gave me an 89. Now, I was pleased with my own accomplishment, but slightly annoyed that the prof didn't round up by just one point. I had all A's and A+'s throughout the term, but somehow, he decided that the mathematical average of these letter grades was 89.

And to those that say it doesn't matter, that A = A+ for all intents and purposes, that's not entirely true. Perhaps on the AMCAS scale A and A+ both = 4.0, but if you want to apply to Ontario schools, be aware that OMSAS (Ontario equivalent to AMCAS) uses a GPA scale where A = 3.9 and A+ = 4.0. Yeah, the difference may be small, but it's still a difference. So my argument is, why accept a lower official grade when you think or know you earned a higher one?

Just my 2.5 CDN cents.

I offer help students in non-curved classes if they seem to need help. I don't cheat, but I try to tell on the kids who do cheat and SCREW up the curve .😡 Remember Bio 194S? Gah that was the worst...a large percentage of the students were looking at their neighbors' tests, and the procters did NOTHING. Seeing these kinds of things makes me hate them.

you think that is gunner material? Man, try taking orgo lab at Cornell--the place where you can NEVER leave lab bench lest one of your "fellow" premeds secretly scoop some of your yield out and contaminate your grignard rxn with methanol. Gunners? you ain't seen nothin' yet.
 
yeah a lot of these things aren't rumors but are truths; perhaps they are rare happenings; but they have happened in the past;

UCI is a little different though; i went to ucla and the intensity of bitching about upping grades, and the pressure to get an A was nowhere near what i'm seeing students go through out at irvine

we had a major: physiological sciences that pretty much sums up every bio major's experience at irvine

a lot of the premeds were phy sci; a lot of my friends were in this major and told me about how competitive it was, etc.

but if you were like me and were an ecology major- you could still be premed without all that pressure

to add to these "stories" one guy at ucla who was known as the super smart kid; would in chemistry lab do the prelab/postlab questions completely wrong so that when people come by for help to "mooch" off him they'd get the wrong answer; he'd go home and correct the errors so that all the people who got "help" from him would basically be screwed...

gotta love those gunners...

If you annoy your professor to give you an A+ instead of an A, that will not give you a better LoR. It will give you a worse LoR and will influence any professors he talks to.

However, if you added up the points and there is simply a mathematical error in the final, then it might be ok. But keep in mind that regrading an entire final might be enough to piss anyone off, especially if you wrote down an answer wrong.
 
Also, lay off people who you don't think have grades as high as yours. It comes off as arrogant, which is not a good quality for a doctor.
 
I think you've got the wrong idea of professors. With the way college students are, they are usually happy when students express interest in doing well. He's not gonna think less of me, I missed an A+ by a point. If I was a prof., I'd be happy to change someones grade if I made a mistake. It would make me feel worse if later I realized I missed something, and didn't give someone what they deserved and could not do anything about it

I've taught college classes before. We are glad when students are interested in doing well. But we hate it when students kiss-up or when they grub for points. If it was a simple honest mistake, they won't care and will be happy to raise your grade, but if the mistake was yours they might be a bit annoyed unless they like you (Won't jeapordize an LoR) and if you come across as grade-grubbing in any manner, it will piss them off (will jeapordize your LoR)
