Today I looked up my MCAT score and it did not go too well!

BS 9
VR 8
PS 7
Total 24

I am extremely interested in the DO program and I lots of volunteer and community involvement. My GPA is on the lower side: 3.3. I am very conflicted as to even apply this year or any year. Any advice would help. Thank you!!

if you want to be a doctor, the best way is to apply to medical school. thats it, its just that simple. so thats the answer to that question, if you really want it, go for it. time is ticking to apply this year, its not too late, but you should get going on it. applying to med school, especially DO programs is a lot more than just your MCAT and GPA. What are your extracurriculars like? you have volunteering and community involvement, thats good. what about research experience or other leadership experiences, hobbies etc? Do you know enough about osteopathic medicine to know what you'd be getting into, and to know you actually want to do it, also to sound genuine in essays and interviews. Do you have letters of reccommendation? Do you have or can you get a letter from a DO or at least an MD? Have you researched the schools at all? Do you have a good idea of where you want to go and what their individual requirements are? If you're up to speed on all this or if you can quickly become so, then go for it, do it now apply, why not? your stats aren't great, but they won't kill you. if you think its going to take some time to get everything in order, thats fine too, you can take a year, maybe you can take the mcats again in april, or maybe you can improve your gpa, and then you'd also be able to apply really early in the cyle in june and give yourself your best shot. the world is yours, you have a ton of options, just do your research, but above all make sure you really want it, and if you do, go for it.

It doesn't hurt to apply. If you have really meaningful volunteer activities and life experiences, you have a chance. Your GPA is a little low but Osteopathic Schools have the tendency to look beyond numbers if you're really humanistic and compassionate. That's my 2 cents!

Your MCAT is fine-your GPA is a little on the low side. How is your science GPA?

I would advise to go ahead and apply.

Please apply! Unless your world is going to collapse from the money it takes to apply please apply. Let the medical schools decide, don't close the door on yourself. You never know what kind of opportunity you are passing up by passing judgement on yourself. Apply!

That statement says it all! Go for it and then worst case you have one round under your belt and try again next year. I know it hurts to not get in, but let me tell you it is better to try and try hard for your dream than to let it pass you by.

😕 I need some feed back! Which is the better choice applying now or waiting till next June and increasing my GPA?? Do schools look down on reapplicants? If yes than I will wait, but if not then why not try to get in for Fall 2005!

I say apply..if you are physically ready (i.e. have your LORs ready, PS finished). You can find my stats in the Official Applicant Progress thread if you want to look, they are kind of sort of similar to yours. Oh, and take a deep breathe...don't panic. Look to see what schools interview into early May. Some schools want to have their classes filled by the end of Dec but remember there is always a chance someone will drop out and you can take their spot. Be selective on the schools you choose. To give you an idea of my experience, I applied at the end of Aug to AZCOM, CCOM, DMU, and KCOM. They sent me secondaries a week after receiving my primary and I got interview invites at all, except for CCOM, 2 weeks after sending in my secondary. Just be patient with the process. Make sure if you decide to apply this cycle to be prepared for the secondaries before they come so that way you can be ontop of the game and get them in fast. What I mean is search SDN for the secondary topics, such as, What is osteopathic medicine, Why do you want to be a DO, etc. Know this stuff like you know your morning routine.

If you apply now you will be late in the application process. I know there are people out there who get in late, but your chances are better the earlier you apply. THis is just something to keep in mind. Regardless, you should definetly apply. Your stats are not horrible. If you do decide to apply in the fall of 2005, you should retake a class to give your GPA a boost.
