A typical class week: Pharm.D

Well, I start at SIU-E in fall...I currently have a full time job, and I know I'm going to have to drop it. Can anyone tell me what a typical week is like in P1? I'm more concerned about amount of days rather than the time, because I'm going to be commuting an hour each way. 😱

We don't have interactive sessions every day, that depends on what the professor plans. Usually we have like 1-2 interactive sessions/week.

That's what sucks...I got my degree in computer science then discovered...I absolutely hate working on computers -- I hate programming, I hate troubleshooting...I even hate other programmer's odor, which I swear they must all be desensitized to. LOL

I was always told by my parents to major in CS because it's something I was good at...and yes...I am...but I cannot imagine a life doing what I'm doing now. Trouble is, I stopped living a student's budget when I stopped being a student. I actually have drive, interest, and motivation to get through Pharmacy school, but it's going to be a budget shock, that's for sure. I'm used to $52k salary...so I'm guessing student loans will have to carry me through.

I am in the same position, BS in Information Technology and will receive my MS in CIS in June. I applied to pharmacy school this fall and I'm waiting for a reply. I am planning on merging the two. There is a pharmacy specialization called Pharmacy Informatics which I plan on pursing once I complete pharmacy school, it may be an option for you too. I am going to continue to work with computers during school (when I get in) to supplement my income because being a pharmacy tech does not pay enough.

I assume from reading the posts that the vast majority of pharmacy schools have classes for 7-8 hours a day right?

Damn Sparda has a hefty schedule, are you in a 3-year program?

Mine last semester was:

Monday:
9-10 physiology
11-12 (or maybe 10-11?) pharmaceutical calculations recitation (didn't go to any except the first one of the semester)
12-1 biochemistry

Tuesday:
9-10 physiology
11:30-1 intercultural communication (elective)
3-4 clinical pharmacy skills

Wednesday:
9-10 physiology
10-11 biochemistry
12-1 biochemistry
2-3 biochemistry recitation
3-4 pharm. calculations
4-6 IPPE meetings (we had 3 of those in the semester)

Thursday:
9-10 physiology
11:30-1 intercultural communication
3-4 clinical pharmacy skills
4-5 clinical pharmacy skills recitation

Friday:
9-10 physiology
12-1 biochemistry

That's what 16 credits roughly looks like. Also 16 credits this upcoming semester (though classes are a bit harder), but much more spread out. For instance, Thursdays I start at 8 and end at 7, with giant breaks. Chances are, you'll go to school Monday-Friday. With schedules in pharm. schools being very rigid, chances are you won't be able to structure your schedule in such a way that you'll have a day off.

And to James: 7-8 hours a day of class 5 days a week? That would be 30 or more credits a semester (realistically a credit isn't really an hour per week). Doesn't seem too reasonable, since you also need to put work in outside of class.

Fall semester:
M-F, had patient care lab on thurs. Longest day was only wed and thurs (cuz of lab), but we were out by 4pm. Other days, it starts about 8-12ish. Not bad still. Plus on Wed, we have like a 3 hr break in between, which is why that day is long.

Winter semester:
No classes on Friday (Whoo-hooo). M-Th 8am-12ish except Wed (3 hr break) and Thurs (lab) til 4pm. Still not bad.

It's a 4 year program however, the Touro NY plan is to do 2 years of coursework and 2 years of rotations. Thus, we're squeezing in 3 years of didactic classes into 2 years.

LOL, I don't go to the Pharmaceutics Recitation Sessions(Calculations) sessions either since you have to move at the speed of the class, which in this case is really slow. I can have an entire chapter of problems done within 2 hours, while in the recitation sessions, they only do like 10 problems in the same amount of time.

If I have any trouble with the calculations, I just e-mail the professor.

Right now, my main focus is on the Biological Sciences course, which is killing me. I must ace the next exam.

I go to SIUE. How do you know you are going there in the Fall? They don't hold interviews until March. Or are you talking about taking pre-pharm classes?

Class from 8 - 3:30 PM everyday. Somedays end earlier. Some days later, lab if you have lab.

6 test in a week and a half, and its not even finals. Everybody looks ugly and tired by the 5th test. Some don't go to all the classes, but just listen to the lectures online/audio/ etc. Don't know about SIU-E though.

P1 is supposed to be tough.
P2 is supposed to be the hardest.
P3 and P4 should be easier.
