AAMC approved Puerto Rican Med School???

I looked on the AAMC website and saw that there are three fully accredited medical schools in Puerto Rico.

Does anyone know what the deal is with these schools? No one seems to talk about them even though they are fully accredited. Is it because they teach in spanish or is there something else?

Pretty much, it is that they prefer people from the island and it is in Spanish (mostly). You should apply if you speak spanish, though. The experience would be worth living on the island.

If you do a search you'll see that there are quite a few threads dealing with med schools in PR. If you do consider applying I would recommend that you can at least understand conversational spanish.

I am a graduating 4th year from Ponce School of Medicine. There are 3 LCME accredited US med schools on the island. They are fully American med schools, listed in the MSAR book and all three are in the 126 (or so) US med schools.

Thing is, they are BILINGUAL med schools, so you really have to speak Spanish to study there. Your clinical years will be almost 100% Spanish speaking patients, and a lot of your lectures have Spanish conversation over English power points and English texts. All tests are in English.

So if you are (nearly) fluent in Spanish and would like to spend 4 years on the sunny island of Puerto Rico, apply! If you are NOT a PR resident, University of PR at San Juan will not take you. Ponce and Bayamon (Central de Caribe) however are open to taking US mainlanders.

I actually loved the experience and liked studying in one of the US's only BILINGUAL med schools. Fun and different. I feel well equipped for a US-mainland residency and to treat lots of latinos!
