Would a kind soul please explain this problem to me based on the info provided in my TPR book click here. I don't understand why is it zero.

What a ****ty explanation. It completely sidesteps the basis of this problem.

The electron configuration of Mg is:

[Ne] 3s2

So Mg has the electron configuration of Neon plus two extra electrons in the 3s shell.

The Mg2+ ion is missing two electrons from the configuration of Mg and looks like:

[Ne]

So where did those two electrons from Mg reside that got tossed to create Mg2+?

They came from the 3s shell, which corresponds to the quantum number, L = 0.

thanks so much shouldvestudied, I just needed to read the last 2-3 lines of the TPR explanation that I posted .. don't know how I missed that.
