A virus replicates with host dNTPs. So host nucleic acid is being transcribed and then translated. Is my definition of nucleic acid too literal?

Perhaps the answer would look better if it said "translation of viral nucleic acids using host machinery".

Viral RNA is translated regardless of what part of the host cell is being used.
