Just so you know, medical schools can now see whether their accepted applicants are holding other acceptances. I just got this email today from one school:

Dear ***,

We note on our AMCAS multiple acceptance report that you have received
acceptances from medical schools in addition to (our school), and we wish to
extend to you our congratulations on that achievement! You are in the
position of needing to choose between schools--a position envied by
many! We know there are many factors you are considering and encourage
you to let us know if there are questions that we might answer to assist
you in your decision-making process.

Please remember that AMCAS 'traffic rules' allow applicants who are
holding multiple offers of admission to have until May 15 to complete
their evaluation of programs and financial aid offers and to make a
decision. The same rules ask AMCAS schools to return applicants'
deposits if the applicant withdraws before May 15. If additional
acceptances are received by an applicant after May 15, the 'traffic
rules' ask the applicant to make a decision between schools within a
two-week time frame. Of course, all of us in the School of Medicine
hope you will choose (our school).

Again, if there is anything we can do to help you, please do feel free
to call or email us.

Sincerely,

-- I don't know if this might affect those of you on the waiting list who have been accepted elsewhere. AAMC Policy: After June 1, any school that plans to make an acceptance offer to an applicant already known to have been accepted by another school for that entering class should ensure that the other school is advised of this offer at the time that the offer is made. This notification should be made immediately by telephone and promptly thereafter by written correspondence delivered by regular or electronic methods. Schools should communicate fully with each other with respect to anticipated late roster changes in order to minimize inter-school miscommunication and misunderstanding, as well as the possibility of unintended vacant positions in a school's first-year entering class.
-- On a +ve note, if a school really wants you, they may be sending a nice scholarship your way to entice you😉

dear +ve,

i know what you did last summer.

Yeah, I know. I actually got a call from one the admissions people at one of my schools and they said that they have known for several weeks now. 🙁

Once they offer you acceptance they can see the list of all the other schools that have accepted you. They just can't do anything about it until May 15th.

so if you are in their waiting list, they shouldn't have any idea whether you have any acceptances?

actually, i think they do know of any other acceptances at this point, as long as you're still an active applicant (waitlistee, acceptee, or decision pending).

I received a similar letter from 2 of the schools at which I've been accepted. Mine didn't remind me of the May 15th deadline, and were more along the lines of "We see you've been accepted multiple places, we really hope you attend our school - let us know if you have any further questions."

Actually, I believe this is true for all applicants still under consideration including those on the waitlist. Adcoms can probably see where you have been accepted in these circumstances likewise. I think others have talked about this in previous posts but I think the system is designed to fit two juxtaposed missions: 1. satisfy us (applicants) and 2. satisfy adcoms. Thus, it would make sense for this information to be available to schools and be monitored by AAMC in their interest. What sucks is that time is running out and some applicants won't even get their financial aid package before this deadline. Especially at schools who notified applicants in mid to late march. That is the real flaw to this system. Some of us will make decisions without even knowing this info, which I don't know about all of you, is a big part of the decision process for me.

I think only the acceptances are 'visible' to schools. Waitlists, withdrawals, rejects remain otherwise invisible.

And you're right...students being forced to commit to schools without a financial aid package in hand is perhaps one of the system's biggest flaws (at least from the perspective of those of us that don't go MSTP or get a full-ride).

I think that if you have not recieved your financial aid package, then you can hold more than one acceptance until you recieve it. I think that you are supposed to notify the schools however and let them know.

Where did you get this info?

What he's talking about isn't really a rule so much as an option. If two schools still haven't given you finanical aid packages and that truly is a huge deciding factor for you, then BEFORE May 15th you should call both schools and see what can be done. Sometimes they will expedite the financial aid offer letter, sometimes they will agree to let you hold multiple acceptances past May 15th (Need ALL the schools to be in on this one). But its not a general rule that without contacting them you can hold acceptances if you haven't gotten financial aid offers yet.

I know for me and others accepted at U of MN, MCW and NYMC we won't have our fin aid packages by the May 15th deadline.

Would MD schools also know your acceptance status from DO schools?

ok....so i've chosen NYMC over Creighton, but have yet to actually contact Creighton. Can I call NYMC and tell them I want to wait til fin aid b/c i'm comparing schools and then pray that I actually get something from them? If i just choose NYMC, then i'm sure it'll be all loans, esp. w/o competition

Ok, so let's see if I got this right. I'm accepted at School A and Waitlisted at B & C, and still waiting to hear from School D; at this point, every school knows where I am on the application process. Will having been accepted to School A then, affect my chances of getting off the waitlists at Schools B & C, and be accepted at School D? And will it work against me at the schools I'm waiting on, to fill out the financial aid forms at the one school I've been accepted to?

I can send in my Financial Aid forms and still wait to hear from these other schools right?

In any case, i'll be calling up Schools B, C, and D and asking about this.

Thanks for replying guys!

dude, they knew this since April 10th

From: http://www.sc.edu/oppa/med/handbook08.shtml

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has so called "traffic rules" that require member medical schools to observe certain restrictions for notification of accepted applicants. The earliest notification date (other than Early Decision Program applicants) is October 15. After this date most schools operate on a "rolling" notification basis.

The problem of applicants holding multiple acceptances into late spring and summer has become more acute during the past few years. Admissions committees are justifiably concerned when students continue to hold a place in the entering class of two or more medical schools, with deposits paid and no way for the medical school to know whether or not the accepted applicant plans to matriculate at their medical school. There is a "domino effect" that often affects several medical schools when one late decision is made and people move from alternate lists to a place in the class of a school higher on their personal preference list. You are justified in holding a place in the class of more than one medical school until you have been notified about pending financial aid applications, for in many instances such decisions will determine where you will matriculate. Once financial aid notification has been made, you should make a prompt decision and then immediately withdraw from all but the school at which you plan to matriculate. It is unfair to the medical schools concerned and to those students on an alternate list but who have no acceptance for some people to continue to hold multiple acceptances after they have all the information on which to make a decision. Some recent changes in the "traffic rules" require medical schools to issue a number of acceptances equal to the size of its entering class by March 15. After May 15 students with complete financial aid information who hold multiple acceptances will be asked to decide on the school at which they will matriculate and withdraw from all other schools. This should help the problem of applicants holding multiple acceptances.

So, what you are saying is we can still hold acceptances until we get financial aid packages? What if that is june? (As is the case for MCW and NYMC?) I don't want to get my acceptances taken away but I can't make my decision until I know what kind of aid I'm getting!

Contact your schools and see if they're ok with it if financial aid is a real concern.

People in the alternate list at MCW won't be happy to hear that you want to wait till June to make your decision :meanie:

do they know of your rejections and withdrawals too?

i don't think so. according to rel it is just acceptances. but if they pay attention, they can obviously tell that you used to be accepted at school x and now school x isn't a school that you're still accepted at (after you withdraw).

I hear that. I called one school today to talk to the dean of admissions to withdraw my acceptance. I MIGHT have let it slip out that I had been offered a scholarship at another school. He told me to hold my decision to withdraw for a week or so and he would get back to me with "more information" after he spoke with financial aid.

So for anyone out there holding multiple acceptances, I have two words of advice:

BIDDING WAR! 😀

I can only envy your position of being able to hold multiple acceptances when I am still gnawing at the bit for my first acceptance.

Then again, I do like the way you engage in negotiations!!!👍👍👍

What about AMCAs schools vs TMDSAS schools? (for us Texans)

Hopefully some schools will see that I have 0 acceptances so far and that I only have waitlists and take pity on me.
