Does anybody know this: Out of the total number of people who took the mcat, what percentage actually made it into medical school.

last year, the combined number of mcats taken (april and august) was 58,764. out of that, about 16,000 or 17,000 get into medical school. remember though, the number of people who applied last year was more like 33,000. also, i think the 58,764 number reflects total number of tests taken, and not number of people who took the test (some people retook the test and were counted twice, in other words)

Then there might be some people who apply with old scores as MCAT scores are valid for 3 yrs.

The MCAT is also required for some other pre-professional schools, like Pre-Vets in many cases.

Mr Reddly posted this in the failed premeds thread:

in 2003, there were 34,786 applicants for 16,538 spots.
Of these, 26,160 people were first time applicants

57,571 people sat for the MCAT in 2002 (for the 2003 cycle above).
Of these, 38,515 people were first time takers.

Last year 58,478 people sat for the MCAT.
Of these, 39,866 people were first time takers.

(in 1996, there were 46,965 applicants for 16,201 spots)

The number of people that took the MCAT who made it into medical school may be off because about 3,000 more enter into DO schools and 800 or so enter Caribbean schools. This doesn't even include those that go to other foreign schools.
