How does one get involved in the AAPM&R as a resident? Are there elections? This is something I am definitely interested in once I start residency. I would love any advice from anyone who has experience with this. Thanks!
PM&R residents can get involved in the Resident Physician Council (RPC) of the AAPM&R. You can either run for an elected position or submit an application for an appointed position. You have to be a member of the AAPM&R in order to get involved with the RPC.
There are two elections: one for president-elect (candidate must have served on the Resident Physician Council for at least one year before running), and another for vice president and secretary. These elections will be in the summer months - 1-3 months prior to the AAPM&R Annual Assembly. The solicitation of candidates will be announced in a few months. I usually post a notice on sdn as well.
You can submit an application for an appointed position, (2 reps to medical education, 2 reps to membership, 1 to Quality Practice and Policy, 1 to Public and Professional Awareness, 1 residency program liaison chair, and 1 delegate to the American Medical Association Residents and Fellows Section) These applications will be accepted around the same time as the nominations for the elected positions.
In addition, the Academy appoints a representative to the Residency Review Committee separate from the above process. The rep to the RRC sits on the RPC board and attends the RPC board interim meeting.
There are also "members at large" appointed to the nominating committee and bylaws committee but those positions are NOT funded to attend the interim meeting.
Here's this year's line-up:
