ABA Pain Boards 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think it’s 77%. This is from ABA website

Looks like there’s a bit of discrepancy for anesthesia vs PM&R

Hi everyone, I am a Prev Med board eligible resident and has oppurtunity to be a part of ACGME accredited Pain fellowship program. But since pain is not recongnised subspeciality of Prev medicine, I assume I cannot write ABA /ABMS exams. But, I may be eligible for ABMS exam. What is the status of insurance acceptance and reimbursements for this. I will highly appreciate if someone can provide their feedback. Should I forego this fellowship?

many years ago, it took 8 weeks for me to get my board results back.

im pretty sure this is modus operandi for them.

nothing will change in your life as a result of passing. anticlimactic at best.

I’ve got a bottle of pappy 10 waiting to be opened if I ended up passing so there’s that

No idea but I just checked and everything looks the same for me. No results yet.

The abpmr site has the pain longitudinal assessments opening tomorrow, so that could be an indicator of it being released tomorrow

Well ABA diplomats site is down for maintenance so I think we will get them today.

Abpmr site updated - passed!

Minimum passing score was 193, I scored in the 290s which was in the 90s percentile. I definitely would not consider myself the smartest guy out there and generally do poorly on exams. I did BV x2 and huntoon x2. Listened to the lecture audio series early on which helped a little but I think overall it is just cranking through the questions.

I do feel that the exam reflected the qbanks. Maybe not the exact questions, but the concepts are there. Know why certain answer choices are right and why the wrong answers are wrong. There are probably a dozen or two incorrectly answered questions in huntoon.

I used chatgpt to explain a lot of concepts to me that I didn’t understand or to double check that certain questions were answered incorrectly in huntoon.

Hey man/women, I know its tough to see that but that test was so BS. It says nothing about your knowledge or what kind of doctor you are. As hard as it is, just try to shrug it off. Take a month or two to clear your head and then time to get back into it. Consider maybe a formal class. They are expensive but they tend to be more step by step and can really provide good structure.

I failed as well. Do you have any ideas or suggestions of formal classes that exist for this exam? I will obviously do my own research but haven’t heard of any before and would appreciate any insight.

This sucks.

This is the only one I know of specifically https://www.dannemiller.com/prc-offers

I believe you can buy the videos/material and do it as self guided. I've heard good things about Dannemiler. Also one of the qbanks has full lecture series as well but Im not sure which one.

I failed last year, passed this year.

Last year prep: maybe 200-300 questions on Boardvitals throughout fellowship year, decided to wing it. Failed 🙁

This year prep: completed Boardvitals after reset, taking time to read incorrect answers, finished most of Huntoon.

A pricey mistake, but outside of that, it was inconsequential to real life and my job.

We’re working on new updated Dannemiller videos set to come out later this year!

I also wrote or edited BV Q bank
Hi! Any idea when the new danemiller videos will come out? Just found out I didn’t pass the pain boards and used board vitals so need to switch something up

i took this many years ago for the oral boards and listened to Big Yeller audio for pain boards:

it looks like the course still exists...

i cannot verify the quality of the recordings now...

i also listened to dannemiller.
He didn't do it this year, I asked and was going to go- didnt have enough people and he had a death in the family (seems like a lovely man)
Regarding the lecture courses, PassMachine has the lectures and a questions bank which is pricey. I read the syllabus for all of it, did about half the videos and about half of the question bank- I think this and Huntoon were marginally higher yield than BoardVitals which I did several times and found profoundly useless (would actively recommend against it). In retrospect given I failed despite several months of diligent studying, I will spend very little (or no) time on Boardvitals. I was deeply frustrated how little the exam reflected any of the common study material and vice-versa including Huntoon and PassMachine

Passed comfortably. Board vitals x1 and Huntoon x1.

Huntoon by far the more representative resource.
I take it you are Anes?

How do you know the margin of passing already? I thought the score report was next week, unles I’m missing something

I received my score report with my percentile and score as well as other data (minimum passing score is 193. Test average 250)
But did you take the your exam through ABA or ABPMR?

Asking because anesthesia folks haven’t received a score report (our impression is 11/07/24). Or, maybe we’re mistaken.

Exactly my question !

Also I wasn’t aware you could take it though PMNR if your primary board was with the ABA

Is that even a posiblity
Become boarded in Anes though the aba
Then register with the pmnr board?
Won’t they want a primary cert in pmnr
Or do I have it all wrong 🤔

ABA writes the exam, ABPMR administers it through Pearson. If you are PMR boarded, you are pain boarded/certified under ABPMR after passing. You schedule through ABPMR, not ABA. Everyone takes the same exam with exception to the experimental questions that may be different person to person and don’t count.

i think your phrasing leaves something to be desired.

if you are an anesthesiologist, you have to take the boards through the ABA.

you cannot go through PMR as an anesthesiologist. you have nothing to do with ABPMR.

PMR docs have to go through ABPMR, even though the test is written by the ABA.

2025 after editing etc

the videos are often used to prep for the boards but are not affiliated with the aba and cannot be marketed to mention the board exam

That said we discuss common topics that are on the syllabus
