Hi,

Quick question: is it accpetable to abbreviate med school name in secondaries? If so, is the proper way to do it to write full name with abbreviation in parenthesis and then use abbreviation for rest of essay?

No need to use the abbreviation in parentheses. They'll know. Just use the full name the first time you mention it, then switch.

Let's assume you are applying to Oregon Health and Science University.

It should be completely acceptable to refer to them as "OHSU" throughout your secondary. You will not confuse them or appear lazy.

This. Schools aren't dumb - they know what you're referring to, and it's fine.

Just be sure, if you recycle your essays, that you delete the abbreviation as well as the whole name. You'd be surprised at the things I see. 😱

yup! i wrote a letter to Mt Sinai and to Miller in Miami and forgot to replace one of the times I said miller with Mt Sinai. reread the letter the day after I sent it and I felt pretty dumb.
