So I'm fine tuning my personal statement and have noticed there are some words that I could potentially abbreviate (to shave down on character count). This may be a stupid question, but I did some searching and there seems to be mixed opinions about what is acceptable to abbreviate and what should be spelled out and then abbreviated. For example, is it necessary to spell out osteopathic manipulative medicine/treatment (OMM/OMT), high velocity low amplitude (HVLA), doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO), etc before using abbreviations freely? Or is it ok to just use the abbreviations since our audience has a background in said field? Any adcom input would be stellar.

All you need to say is you saw OMT performed. You don't need to put in the technique. You are wasting valuable space and it will look like ho hum filler.

FYI: OMM is the class you take in medical school to learn the techniques
OMT is the actual treating of patients in clinic.

Perfect this is exactly what I'm looking for since I need to cut down. And thank you for educating my nooby pre-med self
