- MD/PhD Student
I'm an MD/PhD student who recently completed their PhD and is currently on wards. I am planning to apply to internal medicine this fall via the ABIM research track in hematology/oncology. Taken from the ABIM Website:
Has anyone done programs in GI, heme/onc, pulm/cc, or rheumatology/AI? Are the programs 6.5 or 7.0 years? Based on the quote above, it appears to be 2 years IM + 1.5 years specialty + 3 years research (6.5 years total). However, I can imagine programs extending it 2 years IM + 2 years specialty + 3 years research or 2 years IM + 1.5 years specialty + 3.5 years research to make it end in June (7 years total). Thanks!
The minimum full-time clinical training required for each subspecialty is also required for Certification through the research pathway. Specifically:
- 12 months in adolescent medicine; allergy and immunology; critical care medicine; endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism; geriatric medicine; hematology; hospice and palliative medicine; infectious disease; nephrology; medical oncology; pulmonary disease; rheumatology; sleep medicine or sports medicine
- 18 months in gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, pulmonary/critical care medicine, or rheumatology/allergy and immunology
- 24 months in cardiology
