Hey all--
I am an MS3 looking to schedule 1-2 good away rotations. My school has a very short (2 week) Anesth. rotation with no residency program so I need to go somewhere to 1. learn alot and 2. get some good letters. I was also thinking about doing a SICU rotation before I leave to buff up.

Does anyone know of programs that are great to visiting students? I am looking to go somewhere somewhat metropolitan. I was looking to do 1 in Chicago.

Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks!

NYU and St. Luke's Roosevelt are great places to get some hands on and also end up with great letters.....good luck with your rotations

Elsewhere on this board, people have posted their opinions regarding which are the top programs in the country. Although those opinions should be taken with a grain of salt, you can pretty well assume programs at big-name places will be good, and I think it makes sense to do an away rotation at a "brand-name" program. Your letters will likely carry more weight than doing a rotation at a less prestigious program, even if the amount of actual hands-on learning is less.

I'm sure people will disagree with this listing, but I think in general, the Harvard programs, Cornell, Columbia, UCSF, Stanford, U of Chicago, and Mayo are some of the higher-up programs. In any case, most program websites have a link to a "medical student elective" page which will help you set up the rotation. The SICU rotation ahead of time will certainly be helpful; I took 6 weeks in the unit before my "away rotation" at Stanford.

thanks for the help 🙂

How do you go about getting an away rotation squared away? Is there an application process, and if so, how does it work? Can you go anywhere to do anything from wherever you are?

Go here and click on extracurricula compendium. It list the sites to externship applications everywhere. Fees vary by institution. Good LUCK!! SEND OUT APPS EARLY!!

can you rotate coming from anywhere? Say...do an away rotation at UCLA coming from NYMC or something?

I would sure think so. When I applied to rotate at Stanford, I don't think the app even required me to say where I'm a student (U of MN). And it didn't really seem like an application in the sense that they just want to make sure you're a student in good standing, not that you're some all-star. It really seemed like more of a formality, and I didn't get the feeling it was a competitive process. That was my experience, anyway.

i am having an aneurysm trying to think of where to go! :scared:
