Okay so I ran a search on here about gpa and grade replacement and the most common answer I've seen is that the individual school will choose to take the higher grade in a retake or average the grades. However I was looking at the Optomcas website and I found this:

How will repeated courses be handled?
If repeat courses taken at the same school will be marked as repeated under special classification. The final attempt will have full credit value and will be included in the GPA calculations. All prior attempts will have a credit value of 0.0 and will not be included in the GPA although the course and grade will be listed in the coursework.

I realize that Optomcas is brand new, so is this a new policy? This is really important to me, because retakes drastically affect my cgpa. From this information it seems like they share the same philosophy of grade replacement like DO medical schools.

Optometry schools will see your old grade.. but it doesn't count...

If you take a class the first time and get a C.. and retake it and get an A... Your gpa will be based on the A...

If you take a class the first time and get a B... and retake it and get a C... Your gpa will be based on the C...

So you have to be careful as well...

I think you should call the schools you are interested in to find out for sure. The schools may still recalculate your GPA based on their own standards.

This is very much my concern too. I don't think the fact that Optomcas takes the most recent grade affects policies of individual schools. i.e. I'm interested in midwestern AZ but don't think I'd bother applying there since they will in fact average all the repeated grades. bummer!

Well thats sucks, sorry to hear that. Retakes changes my gpa .35 points, so that 3.55 I have drops to a 3.2. So much for working hard and trying to get an upward trend just to have ur retakes averaged.
