I'm going to start the 5 year medical course this october and I was planning to buy a laptop, but then i came across this: http://www.rcsi.ie/medical_school/Student_Support_Services/Computer_Support/index.asp?id=727
It seems like a good laptop but i guess ill have to get used to the mac.
Question: Is it going to be a good laptop, as in brand new with the specified specs? and so should i actually cancel buying a laptop then?
I'd appreciate the advice, thanks!

yeah its a brand new mac laptop - they come with all the up to date specs and are updated throughout college. you pay a computer support fee during the year which is a little high but you do get good service - so "free" laptop is a bit of misnomer cos you pay a 'support fee' during the year

don't buy a laptop - everything is configured for these ibooks, including the networks, moodle (virtual learning environment), etc. and it tends to be easier if you use the excellent laptop you're given!

macbook is great!
You'll be able to connect to the network and exchange files with your classmates without any hassle

or you can do what i did... sell your mac laptop as soon as you get it... like off ebay.. and then use that money to buy an ibm laptop. however, the risk is that u have to graduate from rcsi, because if u fail, i think u have to return the mac laptop..... not 100% sure about this...

Yup it's only yours after you graduate, worst case scenario if you don't graduate is to say you "lost" the laptop in which case they'll ask you to pay for the value of it, a bit unfair considering they ask for the support fee, happened to a friend of mine who sold his laptop and decided to resit his LC after doing one yr at RCSI.
