If one is applying to medical school in the future, is interfolio a type of service where you can archive your letters of recommendation? For example; if im going to be applying in the 2013-2014 cycle, can i start asking my professors for LOR's and have them send it to interfolio? That way i have a letter from them before i begin to lose contact with them since i won't be in their class anymore?

Yes. Interfolio is wonderful and does everything you want it to. You can collect the letters now and attach amcas id and letter id later, or even send it to non amcas schools with different id systems.

So if i ask a professor for a letter of recommendation who do i have them submit it to?

Have them submit it to Interfolio. You transfer to AMCAS yourself once your application opens and you have access to your AMCAS ID and letter ID.

What is Interfolio? I've never heard of it before.

You can, but wouldn't you want to have an updated one anyway? 😕

Interfolio.com is an awesome system for collecting and distributing LOR's, including confidential ones that the subject is not allowed to see. It integrates very well with applying to amcas and non-amcas medical schools. My only connection is that i'm a satisfied customer. It does one job and does it really well.

If you know you will only apply once, and only apply to amcas medical schools, interfolio would be unnecessary I suppose.

Cool, thanks. Sounds like a great service. I don't think the pre-med advisor at the local college knows about this. I'll have to let him know since it sounds like it would be quite useful.

So I'm going to be giving my professor my information, do I need to give him my AMCAS or Letter ID if I'm using interfolio? Thanks

You should be able to create an entry for each letter writer on Interfolio, which then allows you to print off a form for each letter writer with information on where to send the letter and a specific code for each entry. Once Interfolio gets the letter they mark it on the site. I gave my writers the form, a stamped envelope to Interfolio's address and a CV. You don't need to give them your AAMC ID - once all of your letters are in to Interfolio, you can send them to the AMCAS letter service.

Here is what I did. Schools request some specifics such as being signed, being on official letterhead, and including the applicant's full name and AMCAS number. If you are requesting a letter before you have an Amcas number then that oculd be hard to include. Everything else you should specify in your request.

Dear….

I am writing to you in request of support for my medical school application in the form of a Letter of Recommendation.

I have attached a rough draft of my personal statement that I will be submitting with my application to give you some more background on where I see myself in life and what I am hoping to achieve.

With the time that I spent with you ….. in work, volunteering, whatever….. I hope that you are able to provide a positive contribution to my admissions package. More discussion of our relationship, what I learned from you, what I learned about myself. This helps the letter writer select some topics to write about. Help them help you.

I request that the Letter of Recommendation be forwarded to the online letter-service, Interfolio. Please address your letter on official school letterhead and include your signature. I have included the Interfolio Document Request form which must be included with your letter of support when posted to Interfolio. I have provided a pre-stamped and addressed envelope along with a copy of the Writing Letters of Recommendation guide from University of SDN. If possible I would appreciate receipt of the letter by July 30th, 2012.

The official letter must include the following identification data in order to be linked to my application:

Jane Mcgruber Doe
AAMC# 12345679

I thank you in advance for your help and please contact me with any and all questions either via email
sdner@sdn.org or phone 123-456-7890.

Your Sincerely,

Jane Mcgruber Doe

Do they have to email it, or could they upload it straight to the site?

How do you manage this if applying both MD and DO? Can't really list both AAMC # and AACOMAS # on the same letter can you?

Or...you could just use interfolio, have them send it to interfolio, then from interfolio you send the LOR with the specific AAMC #ID and don't have to worry about giving them AAMC# or AACOMAS#

Perfect, I'm using Interfolio. I was just confused because the post above listed his AAMC # and was using Interfolio. I'm guessing it was because he/she was only applying MD? So applying to both MD/DO, just follow the basic interfolio instructions and I'll be good?

You do not have to give your letter writers AACOMAS or AAMC ID #s.
