For those that trucked out to Boston this year, did anyone see the ABPS (American Board of Physician Specialties) booth at the exhibitor expo? While I'm all about inclusiveness (that specially-designed aloe hand lotion booth always makes an appearance), I was surprised to see ABPS there.

I know that ACEP isn't AAEM but it still struck me as odd to see an alternative board certification body present at such a high profile event. Hell, maybe I should get to work so I can get double boarded in EM and Orthopedic Surgery.

Is that the group trying to become an alternative certifying body in response the continuously increasing re-certification requirements? Or am I mixing them up?

Disappointing. ACEP isn't ABEM nor AAEM or course. I've never liked how close they are with lots of the big CMGs, but I hate to see any association with ABPS. I'd prefer those guys to be out there doing their own thing in the wilderness with no one paying attention.

You are mixing them up - the alternative group that requires initial ABMS in the specialty that you are applying for is NBPS:

Just a question, is the NBPS certificate recognized anywhere?, Or is this basically one guy who is leveraging a situation to create a nonclinical income stream (the Holy grail of all physicians?)

At least there are a few states that recognize ABPS. Wouldn't it make more sense for us to join ABPS in a large group and take it over?

It's only recognized by handful of hospitals at the moment, as recognition of this alternate board certification requires a change in the hospital's bylaws:

1) Capital Region Medical Center – Jefferson City, MO (affiliated w/ Univ. of Missouri)
2) Brandon Regional Hospital – Tampa, FL
3) Shawnee Mission Medical Center – Kansas City, MO
4) Mendocino Coast District Hospital – Fort Bragg, CA
5) Florida Hospital Heartland Division – Sebring, FL
6) Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center/Texas Heart Institute – Houston, TX
7) Hoag Hospital, Newport CA
8) Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, DC.
9) Southeast Missouri Hospital, Cape Girardeau, MO
10) Columbia Basin Hospital, Ephrata, WA
11) St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne, PA

As for ABPS, it's a 'backdoor' way of someone gaining 'board certification' in a specialty they did not train in, which is not what NBPS is about, as it requires initial ABMS certification in that specialty in order to obtain their certification.

The cost of this board certification is far cheaper than ABEM, and requires only a set amount of CME, no MOC, no recertification exam, which is the reason it was created.

It's not one guy. Not like Paul Rand, though the idea is the same. Without the wacko factor.
