Hey I was wondering how many of you out there have to have absolute silence when you study? I study in my room by myself. I tried going to the libray but everytime someone walks by, I end up looking up. I live at home right now, but I'm going to either transfer to UF this spring or UCF. UF is the only state school in Florida with a dental school. I was thinking if I go to UF, it's going to be a bit harder, but I hear they also favor people who go to their college. I don't know if this is true or not. If I go to UF, I would have to live in a dorm, and I'm not sure if having a dorm with a bunch of people I don't know would be a good idea. My other option is to go to UCF, which is about 30 minutes from my house, and I could live at home with the rents and my GPA may be slightly higher, and I would save some $$$ What do you guys think? For those of you who live in a dorm, are your roomates respectful? Do they keep quiet?

Studying in a library may seem annoying at first. But once you get used to it, it's not really bad.

I must have absolute silence as well. I buy a big box of earplugs that I order. I started using them religiously when studying for the DAT at the library, now I use them to study too. They work great.

If i could do it again i would go to a state school and get a 4.0 or close to it..... they do not favor their own students enough to make it worth it.... My undergrad school didnt give me an interview (yet) at its dental school.

Practice temperance, get enough sleep, and exercise daily with lots of water each day. Before long, you'll find yourself so absorbed with your studies that those peripheral anoyances turn minimal in no time.

That's pretty bad.

But I think that state schools have even less of a preference for it's own students. I tend to believe that they try to weigh all state residents equally.

(i'm a little bitter towars the overpriced private schools)

I too need complete silence (including no visual distractions) when I study. Therefore, I have never been able to study at a library...not in undergrad or now in dental school. I can only study at home, where I can control the surroundings.

If I need to be in a library (like if it's between classes and I don't feel like going home), I do have my 32 dB earplugs and the whole world gets quiet 🙂. I try to face a wall and that's usually fine.

For me, I study best in my familiar surroundings at home, since I'm good about not letting myself get distracted. If you're really bad with television (I didn't even buy cable) or you get a lot of visitors, you may indeed have to force yourself to get used to a library.

Regardless, it's always possible to live in a quiet place. I'd recommend footing the bill to live alone or at least have your own room in a quiet house. It may be a little more, but you can always live farther away to make it cheaper and it's worth doing better and getting more out of dental school!

Also, would you necessarily do better living at home with your parents? I know I wouldn't, just because I wouldn't be able to enfold myself into a study bubble as easily, and I just wouldn't want to live there throughout professional school anyway.

So it's totally your call, but just don't force yourself into something that won't work and it takes the whole first year to realize it...

Your call really... Personally, I need some noise (such as listening to music) as it provides a more relaxed environment for me to study. If things are too quiet, then even the most minute distraction (pencil drop) would irritate me quite a bit. The library is usually the place for me, but not the silent study area since I need to listen to music without people giving me mean stares, plus its quiet enough to nap in order to let the info sink in.

Thanks for replying. It's nice to know there is mature people on this website who have good advice. I've met a lot of people on here who have nothing to say but smart remarks. You know the kind of people who are lonely and miserable inside. But yeah, I wasn't sure about state schools favoring their undergrads. Some people say yes,and some people say no. I would love to go to UF, but I just want some place QUIET to study, and I don't know if that's possible in a dorm. Hell, if I have to, I'll study in my car. I'm about to go buy some ear plugs and check em out. Thanks guys, and good luck on Dec 1'st!

Yes, I may be wrong aboutmy belief about in-state preferences for instate residents.

Just be sure that you apply for housing early upon receiving your acceptance to dental school if you plan to live in a singles dorm. I've been shut out of housing and singles before b/c I did not apply early enough. Gl

i study best at quiet places, so i study best at home. the thing is, if you live with your rents, how will you take advantage of a drunk girl?

if you live in a dorm NEVER count on getting a roomate who will always be quiet when u are studying. I like quiet when I study too but my roomate had like this technology ADD and if a computer/stereo/tv was not on and blaring at all times she could not function. definitely give the library another shot-try and find a place away from computers if typing noise bothers you, good luck 🙂

My parents understand I have needs.... I just have to keep the moaning to a minimum

Go to UF... the dental school HIGHLY favors kids that come from UF. Plus, there are study rooms in most of the dorms that are very quiet. Also, hit up the Law Library or Marston library... some floors are more social, but if you hit up the 3rd floor of Marston, it's completely quiet. And go to CVS (or any drugstore for that matter) and get a box of Leight Sleepers ear plugs. They drown out 32 dbs... very very quiet

i have to have absolute silence to, but our library has quiet rooms as well as a floor that no one ever goes to. so its not that hard to find a quite place.

listen to bob marley when you study...that alone will bring your grades up 😀

No, because whenever I listen to Bob I'm usually skiing or longboarding down hills. So if I listen to him while studying, that's what I wanna do. Good ole' Bob. Hey, do you have his 5 disc CD set called "From the Vaults." Great stuff that he did that didn't become mainstream. Dope.

Once I focus on something, I cannot hear anything except study materials in my head. Maybe concentration helps.

Ya i need complete silence unless im really into the material, which for the most part is not true. Thats why i usually go to the library, its about the quietest you are going to get unless you get get into room by yourself. I find consistant noise kinda helps, like white noise or the sound of a dishwasher going. Your mind blocks it out and it also helps drown out other sounds. Ear plugs are more distracting it seems than helpful for me.
