I get emotionally abused by a professor almost every single day. This is really taking a toll on me as I feel about 1 inch tall at the end of the day. I have tough skin but I'm really getting abused here.

What can I possibly do about this??? I'm screwed if I complain (I'm sure they won't do anything) and my life will be worse. I'm also screwed if I do nothing because I'm so miserable.

Anyone have any ideas???? I am trying to suck it up but I feel so powerless and weak.

Can you be a little more specific? Like what exactly does he say to make you feel that way. I know you said you have tough skin but what seems harmless to some may seem like abuse to others. Not that I'm defending the prof or anything but just give a few more details so we can determine if it truly is abuse.

Truthfully the details don't matter. The best way to smash these things is speak up, if you can approach the situation carefully (eg, with out putting him/her on the defensive) you should speak with them directly. See how it works. If that does not work climb the chain of command. The course director -> department head -> dean.

If your complaint is well founded your professor has a boss who has his/her proverbial nuts in a sling.

That being said the semester is almost over, hang in there.

The abuses you'll receive from your patients will make the "abuse" from the professor seem like a walk in the park. If you work in an urban school clinic, there's a very good chance you'll be cussed at, spit at, bit at, grabbed at, etc by your patients.

My $0.02, tough it out. Not everyone in this world is required to tell you that you're oh so smart and awesome and talented, and many times your professors/residents/patients will tell you the very opposite ("what in the hell are you doing?") and the sooner you realize this the better.

wahhhhhhh....someone said I'm not good. Are your classmates complaining on sdn too?

so you think verbal abuse is bad huh? I get abuse physically every day by the 3rd and 4th year dental students...they throw me in the lockers and pee on me and they always smash my impressions against my head if I ask them if they are good. You're just lucky you arent in my situation

are you a girl? just wondering.

I obviously have no clue what is being said to you. That being said, before you do anything drastic, take a step back and try to figure out why he is picking on you. Was it something you did? Were you the first one to offend here, and now that he is giving it back, you don't like it anymore? Does he do this to everyone or are you the only one? What is he saying? Is it really offensive, or are you just being sensitive? Now, if he really is in the wrong, and this isn't a case of you being offended, too sensitive, then go and do something about it, but not before. The worst thing you can do is complain, and come to find out you are just being a weanie. BUT if you are legitimately being abused, make sure it stops right away.

wow...this thread definitely got me worry about going to dental school. I'm a minority and I worry about not fitting while in dental school. I've heard there are professors who still hold traditional beliefs that minorities and women should not be in dental school. Therefore, I expect to live a low self-esteem life while in dental school. 🙁

If it's not a physical abuse then you should stay humble and strive to finish the course. After you got your DMD/DDS, you can definitely give whomever abuse you a middle finger.....and say TAKE THIS MOTHER$$$$.

I am a minority, and I have never had a problem with any professors. From my experience, the majority of people that have a problem with professors brought it on themselves.

Most need to constantly reminded at how great they are, or they suck at whatever it is they are doing and constantly annoy the teachers with stupid questions. We need to remember that our teachers are very smart, they are human and can be annoyed the same way we can. How would you like it if every 5 mins the same person came up to you asking if their angulation on their buccal wall was off 5 degrees?

agreed with this... Don't forget to thanks your instructors for their criticisms especially those harsh ones. They are all trying to make you a better clinician.

How in the WORLD does being a minority have ANYTHING to do with this? You guys make it sound like getting a DMD is like going to KKK school.

Chill out, for a second and think before you type. Why not try to help this kid, instead of making this a pissing match about race.

UUUhhhh...Go back and read what was written. It is posts like yours that turn this into a "pissing match about race." Nobody has said that race has anything to do with receiving abuse in dental school. IN FACT, the opposite has been said. If you don't have anything productive to bring, don't pad your post counts.

That being said, I usually agree with what you have to say, and everybody says something stupid at one time or another. This time, you should take your own advice and

What are you talking about.... Someone above clearly brought up race. Pretty funny that you can join this month and lecture someone who has been around as long (and as helpful) as SuperC. He has 600 posts in two years; you have 37 in the last two weeks, so I would say that he probably isn't padding his count.

Okay, let's go back and read what was actually written before you two freaked out. One poster (ProHeartBreaker) said this:

So, he is worried that he will be treated poorly because he is a minority. Did I interpret that wrongly?

So, I replied:

I am a minority, and I have never had a problem with any professors. From my experience, the majority of people that have a problem with professors brought it on themselves.

I basically said that you will NOT be treated differently because you are a minority. Right? Is there anything in that back and forth that resembles anything to the effect of a "pissing match" or that getting a "DMD is like going to KKK school"?

No, there isn't. SuperC and yourself have completely over-reacted here.

Now, this is actually a pretty hilarious post to read. I have been a member of this board since 2004, and have almost as many posts (586 plus the posts made as toofshucker) as SuperC has. I recently (this month, as you have so astutely pointed out) decided that my screen name revealed too much personal information, so I changed it.

So, if you knew who I really was, would you not have a problem with me? Ha ha.

Sigh...why can't we all just get along

No problem with you. I just thought it was a pretty stout attack on him for no particular reason. I don't think someone with that few posts over such a long time should be accused of padding his count. Sorry that I caused a digression in the the OP's topic.

On the original topic, I am also a minority and have seen no different treatment. Heck, a large percentage of my class is minority so I agree that if someone is going to worry about something, it shouldn't be their race. I would suggest worrying about Histo or Pathology...

I would suggest worrying about Histo or Pathology...

S'all good. I had to laugh at this though, half my class is still complaining about the Histo teacher from last fall. 🙂

Toofshucker what school do you go to, if you don't mind me asking. I go to Temple and was wondering, since you live in Philly, if you were talking about Temple's histo teachers cause i actually think they are pretty cool profs.

I hate to say it, but profs put you down wherever you are. I try to avoid those who are ridiculous if I can. If not, you simply have to grin and bear it- take it out on the weights at the gym. Complaining is almost definitely not worth it unless you have something concrete showing specific, targeted attacks against you personally. Even if you do have something concrete, you are not likely to get anywhere- your word against a tenured professor doesn't mean much. Not to be mean, but news flash- dental school sucks. You just have to do your best and count the days until it is done...

Notice how the OP never once responded to her own thread....

This is likely a prank thread.

Yeah, I go to Temple, and I personally like the professors, but my class hated them. I purposely wrote a good review for him, cause everyone else ripped them. One thing though (I don't know if you are a D1 or not), but don't listen to them when they tell you what slides to know/forget. They don't keep track of that, and it seems like every test would have a couple of questions from slides that they told us not to know. Ha ha.

If you don't feel comfortable with these tactics try visualizing yourself doing these things when they abuse you. Then laugh really hard. The instructor will think you're crazy, become worried about your mental stability, and leave you alone.

Okay so I will admit, I get a little fired up sometimes, but it is what Pro Heart said that gets me pissed. This is a comment that barrel-roles in to a nightmare post about racism and the post gets closed. The post may have NOT been a fake, and someone may be having a serious problem, hence PIPE DOWN on the what about me crap and help the kid. Even if it is a fake, someone else out there may be having the same problem, who MAY have found the replies helpful.

As for padding my counts, you're right. I came home today, and said "Look Ma!, I finally have 600 posts on SDN!"

don't pad your post counts.

My only goal on SDN is to try and help, some people like my advice, others don't. I can live with that.

609!!! CHAAAAAA CHINGGGGG!

Oh snap!!....No you didn't!! I don't know why you'd give up a lucrative career writing jokes for Letterman to go to dental school🙄

It seems like one can't even open a thread these days without a couple of lame geektards trying- and failing miserably- to sound clever, no matter the topic of discussion. Some of these posts sound like they were written by 15 year olds.

Get a clue people. Seriously.

Wow. Thanks for that mean spirited reply. I bet you're tons of fun to have around. Lighten up.

This post is 100% dead on👍 There are far too many students out that that are so afraid of failing at anything that it greatly hinders their learning process. Bottom line, every prep you make won't be 100% perfect😱 What hinders most people is the ability to transition from not knowing what is wrong with it and being able to recognize the flaws and learn from them.

Often what will cause a student to feel that a prof is mocking them has to do with how the student asks a question. For example, lets say that your prepping an MO on #19, and after completing it you show the prof. Rather than just simply saying to the prof "how's this" if your able to look at your prep and see something you feel you need to improve on this will show the prof alot about your professional development. For example, lets say that the #19 MO you just prepped has axial walls in the box that aren't symetrically convergent. Asking the prof when you have them evaluate your prep in something like the following manner "I was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to better prep the axial walls in the box?" will make a HUGE difference in how the prof views you.

The ability to critically evaluate the info infront of you and then ask appropriate questions is one of the key skills that the dental education system is trying to get across to you. It's something that after graduation you'll use every day in treatment planning/treatment discussions with patients. This I'd bet is one of the issues that is behind some of this perceived "mocking"

Speaking of abuse, this thread needs to get its ass kicked. Its definitely asking for it.

Weak. 👎

Don't kid yourself. The only "mean spirited" reply here was given by you and a couple of others to the OP who was obviously distressed.

Just read the silly crap posted by the Internet Tough Guy above me. I'm sick of having to scroll over post after post of cheesy remarks and juvenile mocking directed toward people who are asking serious questions. %90 of the time the inane comments aren't even remotely funny. Ironically, the sheer lameness of most of these jokers tells me they were the kind of dorks who endured that exact type of ridicule in high school. You know who you are. You ain't fooling anybody.

I'll tell you something that worked for me with a prof. that like to pick on me.

I found out where he parked his car. On my way by the parking lot every day I went out of my way to spit on the windshield.

I know it is childish but I could smile as he hassled me in the clinic after that.

Ha ha ha, well I thought it was funny DrHobie. DeeEmDee...mmm...not so funny. Rather soapbox-ish. Would never make it on Letterman.

Not so much a smile for me but a deceptive grin 😀, and its almost as good as wiping boogers on his door handle. 🙄...speaking of which, there was this one prof back when I was in clinic that would always pick on me when I first started. I mean she was known to humiliate incoming clinicians because we just didn’t know any better. And I guess she's just craves power trips, probably because she was picked on alot when she was clinician. hehehe. And the horrible thing was she was a CI for resto, so yeah we were basically sitting prey.

And it would seem that she would put the extra effort to be extra mean to me. Anyway, one day I wrote an anonymous letter to the dean expressing how I felt and speaking in behalf of an anonymous student body. hehehe. Apparently the following semester, she was reassigned to the perio section critiquing prophylaxis. Who says karma doesnt exist?

that is one of the most childish, selfish, and deceiving things you could've done. it is sad that people such as yourself are in dental school.

Possibly one of the trashiest, lowest class things I can think of is spitting on someone's car. Boy, you sure showed him.

By your reaction I'm sure you probably deserved the picking on.

first of I’m done with dental school, and secondly try walking in someone's shoe's before passing judgment, ayt buddy? ...There's a fine distinction between criticizing one's fault to make him/her a better person and constant humiliation to an extent that its not professional anymore. Apparently, anyone who screams and deliberately embarrasses people to the point of regularity is something you haven't experienced yet.

agreed, but there are better ways to handle such situations than by writing an anonymous letter to the dean signed "Students of the Class of 2006." (or whatever year you graduated)...

the point is: don't drag others down with you. if you have an issue, seek your class president and voice your concern through the proper channels.

Is dental school making people pissy? Has SDN changed in the 3 months I've been gone? Or are people just less testy in the predent section because the aren't overworked and underslept. Agreed, I don't think that was a very good solution, but I'm surprised JB. I remember you as...less prone to excessive adjectives

lol, I think the stress is getting to all of us. I've only been in school five weeks, but I can't wait until this quarter is over...

when i wrote that i was in the middle of our "hell week" of the semester.. still not making what i said right..

but i have experienced the effects of what dentheartthrob did on the entire class. some anonymous clown in our class wrote an outlandish letter to the dean signing it "Students of the class of 2011." it's unprofessional and unfair. we are in dental school, we are (supposed to be) professionals. all i'm saying is that there are other channels to carry out such frustrations. no need to spit on cars or write anonymous letters. talk to the class prez and have him address the issue. simple as that.

jb!🙂

A lot of dental professors were trained in the military and that's often how military guys act. In some weird sense, this professor may be trying to help you. I have been practicing Dentistry 25 years and I really, really love it. in the 70s it was very common for professors to openly degrade you, destroy your wax ups, pull teeth off of denture set ups and a lot more. I got through it and I am happy I did. Looking back, many of these guys now treat me as an equal since I ran the gauntlet they established.
Tough it out and keep the long run in view.
Dental school is NOT real DENTISTRY.
Next year there will be other professors.

an anonymous letter I consider was the right thing and the fair thing, considering that a petition would inevitably have more severe consequences for her and for us, consider it as a warning. It was discrete and to the point that some students are not happy. And considering that she was relocated to an area that has less potential for stress is an apparent win-win situation. Consider, that it wasn't just our class but classes before us that had to put up with this women. This women was old school, but to the point of screaming and scrutinizing infront of many, to the point of insulting that its not really helping. Before her, I have yet to met a CI/prof that would openly degrade students, ex "IDIOT, everyone is waiting in line you are causing a back up., you think you are so special...etc etc." stuff like that. Like some one said it was like military where they would constanly degrade you. But everyone has limits.

I am glad you did what you did. A lot of these faculty members are racist or loser or drug addict or alcoholic. Virtually every non-white and/or non-jewish member of my dental school felt it is just a jail term so we simply pay our dues, serve our time, shut up, and hopefully get out on time. Talking to the class president isn't gonna help.

The post said nothing about racism. I don't know where you went to school, but I go to a very conservative/white (faculty) midwestern school and have not found this to be the case at all. I am sorry that your experience was like that, but I don't think people should assume that all dental schools will be that way.

I've had good time here at Case. Sometimes I felt like I've taken advantage of my instructors' kindness in the past 1.5 yrs. 😀😀

Why would anyone want to pad their SDN account?

No seriously...I never type just to type.

I wished I went to another school. I never felt discriminated in my entire life and never even thought about it! Never in high school or college; only in dental school.
I was picked on as well and felt mentally abused- to a point where I wanted to kick the lockers, scream or jump on the tables. I felt also powerless as I felt like I could not say anything or do anything about it. I would not study and spend hours talking on the phone and talking about how depressed I was. The instructors would take their pens and stabb it, X10, to show you that you don't take a max tray to take a lower arch impression on the mannequin. They would scream at you in front of the patient, , they would tell you to shut up, they would accused you of cheating when you really did not do it and they did not have any proof-but you could have been kicked out of school-and so you had to spend money to get advised from a lawyer, they reminded you of your very first and only pulp exposure every time you saw them, they would prohibit you to practice in the lab but would allow your classmate to go there, they would tell you that your preps sucks even if they never saw your work, they would talk bad about you to the whole department and so all the other instructors would hate you too......I personally experienced the above and much more. Sometimes, a lawsuit is not a bad idea!!! Why should school be like that! It is a taste of HELL ON EARTH.
