Do you guys know of any academic or research competitions for college students? I know there were a lot for high school students but I've searched on google and not much came up for college students. Most of the ones I found were for teams (like Mock Trial or Engineering Design competitions that you work as a team and requires that your school has a team as well). I haven't found any research competitions either.

I think this depends somewhat what you mean by "competition." Do you mean something where you enter and are given some task (test, project, etc) to complete in a timed setting, or something where you submit information about yourself (personal statement, activities, publications, etc) and get awarded some prize?

If the latter, there are tons of them. So many that I have to assume this isn't what you are interested in. For the former, there are plenty but they're often quite difficult, specific to particular degrees/disciplines/societies, and often poorly advertised. For example, there is the Annual Putnam Competition, or perhaps the University Physics Competition, or one of various business elevator pitch competitions. There are many essay competitions, short story competitions, foreign language exam competitions, etc etc. It's all about your interests, and finding socitieies/funding organizations that are interested.

I can't really recall a research competition besides stuff like travel grants or young-investigator awards. These are specific to the research organization in most cases but there exist others that are more broad. Perhaps you could explain why you want to do this to give us a better idea of what you're looking for.

I think the OP means competitions like the high school Olympiads. The Putnam is probably the closest to what the OP meant.

I too am searching for any competitions, especially in physics. I have heard about the University Physics Competition, but it seems more like a "lab report" competition than a physics competition. Would you, or anyone else, happen to know about any competitions that are multiple choice/free response (but not writing essays) in either physics or chemistry?

There is definitely a national competition for mathematics, although the name of it escapes me. I'm pretty sure it's a nationally administered written examination and there are potential prizes/glory for top scorers.

The same goes for Ancient Greek and Latin.

Yeah that is the Putnam. Not sure about the greek/latin one though. I just wish there were one for physics or chemistry!
